Olympic gold medal-winner Galal Yafai made a pretty impressive professional debut as he stopped the gallant Carlos Vado Bautista in the fifth round of a flyweight ten-rounder made for the WBC international belt.
Cheavon Clarke kicked off his pro journey in style. The former amateur standout—who represented Great Britain in the delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympics last summer—enjoyed a successful pro debut with a second-round knockout of Croatia’s Toni Visic (20-30-2, 5KOs). Clarke scored knockdowns in each of the two rounds of action, the latter producing a full-ten count at 2:01 of round two Sunday at The O2 in London.
Lawrence Okolie takes the next step to plead his case as the best cruiserweight in the world. A rare Sunday evening title fight sees London’s Okolie attempt the second defense of his WBO cruiserweight crown versus Poland’s Michal Cieslak. Both fighters made weight for their scheduled 12-round main event, which airs live on DAZN from The O2 in London.
Tokyo 2020 Olympic Champion Galal Yafai MBE has signed a long-term promotional deal with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing and will make his highly anticipated professional debut on the Lawrence Okolie vs. Michal Cieslak WBO Cruiserweight World Title show at The O2 in London on Sunday February 27, live worldwide on DAZN (excluding New Zealand and Australia).
Galal Yafai said he was overwhelmed after winning the flyweight gold medal at the Olympic Games in Tokyo and admitted he never really thought he would become an Olympic champion.
Galal Yafai postponed plans to join his brothers in the pro ranks in order to realize his dream of winning an Olympic Gold medal. Mission accomplished the second time around.
Galal Yafai made the decision to remain the amateurs long enough to once again compete in the Olympics. So far, it has proven to be a wise decision following his dominant showing in the opening round of competition. Yafai was credited with three knockdowns, the last of which was enough to force a stoppage of Armenia's Koryan Soghomonyan in the third round of their flyweight bout Monday afternoon at Kokugikan Arena in Tokyo. Soghomonyan was issued a standing eight count in every round, the last of which forced a stoppage at 1:54 of round three.
Yuberjen Herney Martinez (Colombia) kicked off Day 3 of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics with a three-round, unanimous decision win over Rajab Otukile Mahommed (Botswana) in their opening round flyweight bout Monday morning at Kokugikan Arena in Tokyo. All five judges awarded every round to Martinez, who won 30-27 on four cards and 30-25 on one card.
Team GB has named the four women and seven men that will compete in the boxing competition at the rescheduled Tokyo Olympic Games. The team includes 2019 middleweight world champion, Lauren Price, and two men that competed at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, flyweight, Galal Yafai and welterweight, Pat McCormack. The trio all won gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Price and McCormack are also 2019 European Games champions and won gold and silver respectively at their world championships in 2019.
