Undisputed junior welterweight champion Josh Taylor could be one fight away from a major showdown - and certainly the biggest fight of his career.
In May, Taylor became the undisputed champ at 140-pounds when he decisioned Jose Ramirez over twelve rounds.
He was scheduled to make a mandatory defense against unbeaten Jack Catterall on December 18. The fight was pushed back when Taylor sustained an injury in training camp. Their fight will now take place in February.
Should he win, there is a lot of discussion about Taylor making the jump to welterweight to challenge WBO world champion Terence Crawford.
Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum, who promotes Taylor, has mentioned the possibility of that fight on numerous occasions.
Former super middleweight champion Carl Froch is a big fan of Taylor as a fighter, but he believes Crawford would likely come out on top if the two collided in 2022.
Froch does not anticipated Taylor being embarrassed in the fight.
"Crawford is a special talent, a big puncher," said Froch to The Scotsman. "Josh certainly deserves to be in there with someone like Crawford, but that's a name that is right at the top of my pound-for-pound rankings. I don't want to say he beats him, but he belongs in there. If I had to pick who would win that fight, I'd have to be honest and say Crawford.
"But there's no reason Josh Taylor can't beat him. In boxing if you're not firing on all cylinders and don't put in 100% performance, anything can happen. I knew then he was a special talent. To go on and become undisputed king at his weight, what a fantastic career he's had so far and he still has lots to do. I think he'll dominate for quite a while. He still has work to do as there's some good fighters coming through and others in the division above him where he might be headed, but for now he's undisputed king and we need to appreciate him while he's there.”
