Frazer Clarke is set to launch an all-out attack on the heavyweight division in 2024.
The 2020 Olympic bronze medallist stopped Dave Allen earlier this month to maintain his unbeaten record. He has a small operation scheduled which looks like keeping him out of the ring until early in the New Year and when he does make his return, the 32 year old wants a real challenge.
As an amateur, Clarke (8-0, 6 KO’s) grew accustomed to fighting the best on a regular basis. He has now spent 18 months as a professional and it is safe to say his frustration at the business side of boxing is beginning to show.
“I’ve gotta keep moving forward now. I want a fight,” Clarke told Boxing Social on Saturday. “I’ve always wanted a fight. I’ve never f------ backed out of a fight despite what they say. People in suits have pulled me out of fights. I’ll fight any of these f------. In fact, anybody in the division because this game has turning into a cringy, f------ horrible game. I don’t wanna say too much. I’m gonna crack on and do my thing.”
Clarke is referring to his team’s decision to withdraw him from the purse bid for a proposed British title fight with Fabio Wardley earlier this year.
David Adeleye was elevated into the mandatory position in his place and will fight Wardley on the undercard of the massive Tyson Fury - Francis Ngannou ‘Battle of the Baddest’ show in Saudi Arabia later this month. Because the fight isn’t taking place on British soil, the British Boxing Board of Control have decided against sanctioning the famous Lonsdale belt for the fight after all but - belt or no belt - Clarke will have his eyes fixed firmly on the winner.
He reiterated that he won’t be held up by boxing politics any longer and is adamant that from this point on, his career will be played out on canvas rather than in offices.
“Every time we talk about this now I get these daft comments, ‘Ah, you don’t wanna fight.’ Everybody knows I want to fight,” he continued. “The reason I didn’t fight before had f---- all to do with me. It’s people making decisions for me. That will never happen again in my life. That was a bit of inexperience on my part.”
As for the highly anticipated fight between Wardley and Adeleye, Clarke is excited to see what happens but - maybe taking aim at Wardley’s stoppage of Mike Coffie back in April, which many felt was premature - he did issue a warning to Adeleye.
“I’m looking forward to that fight,” he said. “I think it’s a very good fight. I think if I was Adeleye, I’d just be worried about the referee diving in after Fabio lands a few shots. Don’t get me wrong, he can whack but he’s not like a [Zhilei] Zhang. He’s sharp but referees don’t need to get excited. It’s a big fight between two big men. Let them fight. Unless one of them’s lying on their back, let it go."
