Frank Warren obviously wouldn’t pick against Tyson Fury, yet he is especially confident that the heavyweight champion he co-promotes will handle Oleksandr Usyk in their title unification fight.
Warren hopes Fury comes out of his 10-round, non-title fight versus novice Francis Ngannou on Saturday night without any cuts or injuries that would delay his showdown with Usyk. Whether England’s Fury (33-0-1, 24 KOs) and Ukraine’s Usyk (21-0, 14 KOs) finally fight later this year or early in 2024, Warren expects the 6-foot-9 Brit to exploit the weakness that nearly cost Usyk his IBF, IBO, WBA and WBO belts against Daniel Dubois in his last fight.
The British promoter broke down Fury-Usyk during a recent interview with TNT Sports Boxing.
“I just think that he’s the better fighter,” said Warren, whose company, Queensberry Promotions, represents Fury along with Bob Arum’s Top Rank Inc. “You know, I look, I’ve sort of studied my fighters and I’ve looked at Usyk and I’ve watched most of his fights now, and a lot of amateur fights. And I know what his weakness is, and it was unlucky that it wasn’t – it was certainly exposed and shown in his last fight where he’s vulnerable. He’s very vulnerable to the body. And, you know, I don’t wanna go over all the stuff again with Daniel, but he showed that weakness.
“And Tyson, I think Tyson’s obviously aware of that as well. And, you know, I’ve gotta fancy Tyson. I just have to fancy him. He’s got a tremendous work rate, Usyk. He’s brave, he’s strong, but he’s in with somebody who I think is the best heavyweight of his generation. And I think he’d be, in any of the generations, any of the ages or generations, he’d be up there with ‘em.”
Dubois dropped Usyk with what appeared to be a borderline body blow during the fifth round of their title fight August 26 in Wroclaw, Poland. Referee Luis Pabon ruled that it was a low blow, which afforded Usyk ample time to recover.
Usyk came back to drop Dubois (19-2, 18 KOs) once apiece late in the eighth round and early in the ninth round, when London’s Dubois was knocked out at Tarczynski Arena Wroclaw.
The long-anticipated bout between Fury, 35, and Usyk, 36, was put together the following month. It was officially announced September 29.
Fury is listed by FanDuel sportsbook as a 20-1 favorite to beat Cameroon’s Ngannou, a hard-hitting former UFC heavyweight champ who will make his pro boxing debut. Fury-Ngannou will headline pay-per-view shows in the United Kingdom (7 p.m. BST; £21.95) and the United States (2 p.m. EDT; $79.99).
