Hurd Stops Galarza, Derevyanchenko Blasts Nicklow

By Rick Reeno - Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, Las Vegas - In a minor upset, Jarrett Hurd (17-0, 11KOs) made a statement with a dominant sixth round stoppage of previously undefeated Frank Galarza (17-1-2, 11KOs). After a close two rounds, Hurd started taking over the fight in the third and landing more of telling blows, and Galarza was feeling the incoming damage. In the fourth, Hurd dropped Galarza for the first time in his career with a right uppercut. Galarza was able to survive to the bell, but he never fully recovered. During the sixth, referee Russell Mora had seen enough, feeling that Galarza was taking too much punishment and stepped in to wave off the fight after another big right uppercut connected. “I knew he was an experienced, tough fighter, but I stuck to my game plan, listened to my corner and came out victorious,” Hurd said. “Once I was able to set up my counter shots, I knew I could hurt him."

MORE LIVE RESULTS TO COME............ Super middleweight Sergiy Derevyanchenko scored an impressive fourth round technical knockout over Alan Campa. After a slow first round, Derevyanchenko began to aggressively walk Campa down. The plan worked as Derevyanchenko dropped Campa with a right cross to the head near the end of the second round. Campa was able to make it out of the round. Derevyanchenko landed at will throughout the third round. Whether it was left hooks or right crosses to the head of Campa, Derevyanchenko seemed to take more out of his opponent with each punch.

That was a pretty sweet knockout, right? Frank Galarza's second round knockout of John Thompson in January of 2014 ranked as one of the more spectacular knockouts of last year. Thompson is trying to move on in the 2015 Boxcino tournament as a junior middleweight, fighting tonight against Stanyslav Skorokhod. Galarza wants to move on and not just be defined or known for that devastating knockout win. Instead, he envisions himself moving up the ranks and fighting the best possible fighters out there. He will get that opportunity tonight, when he faces Sheldon Moore in an eight round bout at the Aviator Sports Complex in Brooklyn, N.Y. The bout will headline a three-bout 'ShoBox: The New Generation' broadcast on Showtime, beginning at 10 p.m. ET/ 7 p.m. PT.

NEW YORK – Brooklyn-native, unbeaten Frank “Notorious” Galarza weighed-in at 154 pounds and Belgium’s Sheldon “The Closer” Moore measured 153 ¼ pounds during Thursday’s official weigh-in for the main event of this Friday’s ShoBox: The New Generation, live on SHOWTIME (10 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast) Galarza (16-0-2, 10 KOs), regarded by many as “The Brooklyn Rocky,” and Moore (13-2-1, 9 KOs) will square off in the eight-round super welterweight headliner of the televised tripleheader from the Aviator Sports and Events Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.

New York, NY - In front of a sellout crowd of his hometown fans, junior lightweight prospect Bryant "Peewee" Cruz, of Port Chester, NY, headlined DiBella Entertainment's Broadway Boxing debut on Friday night, in Westchester County, at the beautiful Hilton Westchester, in Rye Brook, NY. Cruz, 130, showed tremendous heart to recover from a knockdown in round two then engage Jorge Pazos, 128¼, of Guamuchil, Sinaloa, Mexico, in a slugfest the following frame. By the midway point of the scheduled eight-rounder, Cruz took back control of the contest, using his jab to set up combinations and outbox Pazos. Showing superior hand speed, Cruz used left hooks to punctuate flurries upstairs. By the seventh round, a bruised Pazos' face had swelled up from all the punishment he'd taken. After eight exciting rounds, the judges tallied 78-73 twice, and 77-74, all for "Peewee" Cruz, who improved to 14-0 (7 KOs). Pazos dropped to 14-8-1 (8 KOs).

Promoter Lou DiBella has confirmed to BoxingScene.com that a ShoBox card will be staged at the Aviator in Brooklyn on April 10th, a night before DiBella Entertainment puts on the NBC doubleheader from the Barclay Center that has the WBO middleweight title tilt between Andy Lee and Peter Quillin and the match-up between Danny Garcia and Lamont Peterson.

The opener featured a clash of unbeaten Jr. Middleweights. 28-year old Frank Galarza (14-0-2, 9 KO), 153, of Brooklyn, New York, managed to stay unbeaten, holding off a rugged effort from 27-year old Sebastian Bouchard (8-1, 2 KO), 154, of Baie-Saint-Paul, Qubec, Canada, with a decision over eight rounds. Both men fought hard throughout, Galarza using movement and combination punching to bruise the face of Bouchard. Galarza suffered a cut in the corner of his left eye from a head clash, and lost a point for low blows in the final round, but doubled his foe in output and connections while maintaining a steady jab. The scores were clear for Galarza at 78-73 and 77-74 twice.
