When Jamel Herring said he has gone through worse than the headbutt that Jonathan Oquendo gave him during their junior lightweight bout last week that led to Oquendo’s disqualification, he wasn’t joking.
Junior lightweight world champion Jamel Herring spent a few hours at a Las Vegas hospital on Saturday night following his one-sided but rough eighth-round disqualification victory over Jonathan Oquendo inside the bubble of the conference center at the MGM Grand.
Jamel Herring overcame a bad injury to retain his WBO championship title against Jonathan Oquendo this past Saturday night in Las Vegas. The 130-pound titlist suffered a bad cut on his right eyebrow from the head of his Puerto Rican opponent in round five, a move that referee Tony Weeks ruled as an intentional foul.
Jamel "Semper Fi" Herring returned to the ring after two COVID-related postponements, defending his WBO junior lightweight world title via eighth-round disqualification over Puerto Rican challenger Jonathan Oquendo at the MGM Grand Conference Center.
If Jamel Herring handles his business Saturday night in Las Vegas, the WBO junior lightweight champion expects he’ll advance toward a higher-profile fight against Carl Frampton.
It might make more sense to bring a Jamel Herring-Carl Frampton fight to Belfast if fans can attend boxing events in the United Kingdom before they can come to fights in the United States. Herring remains willing to face Frampton in the challenger’s hometown if that turns out to be the case because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Carl Frampton’s admittedly subpar performance in his most recent fight has inspired Jamel Herring to look considerably better against Jonathan Oquendo on Saturday night. Herring is expected to face Frampton in his following fight if he overcomes Oquendo in their 12-round fight for Herring’s WBO junior lightweight title at MGM Grand Conference Center in Las Vegas. Cincinnati’s Herring (21-2, 10 KOs) is a 16-1 favorite to defeat Puerto Rico’s Oquendo (31-6, 19 KOs), but Herring is intent to avoid fighting down to the level of the 37-year-old Oquendo.
Carl Frampton didn’t need to be at his best in order to post his latest win; he simply just needed to make it to the ring in order to move forward with much bigger plans later in the year. The former two-division titlist from Belfast managed his first win of 2020, scoring a 7th round knockout of late replacement Darren Traynor in their ESPN-televised main event Saturday evening in East London, England. A left hook to the body dropped Traynor in round six, with another body shot forcing the stoppage one round later.
Top super featherweight contender Jeremiah Nakathila and his team have had strange feelings these days. The hard-hitting Namibian, who has represented the World Boxing Organization in nine of his past ten professional boxing contests, has been rated in the top 3 by the Puerto Rican-based sanctioning organization for over 18 months but his desired world title shot still looks to be far away.
York Hall, London - Carl Frampton had a late replacement opponent in Darren Traynor and a lot to lose with a junior lightweight world title bout against Jamel Herring looming. Frampton (28-2, 16 KOs), a former two-weight world champion, stopped Traynor with a body shot in round seven of a scheduled 10-round lightweight fight. It took a few rounds for Frampton, who hadn't fought in nearly nine months, to find his rhythm.
