Comments Thread For: Trainer: Canelo Knows Callum Smith is Serious Threat To Him!

Joe Gallagher, the head trainer for WBA super middleweight champion Callum Smith, believes Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez was looking for an easier option when selecting his opponent for May 2nd. Smith was one of the frontrunners to face Canelo on the Cinco De Mayo date.

It's simple both Smith and BJS were offered the same amount offer to fight Canelo. A career payday for both fighters. Smith countered by demanding almost double the offer, Saunders countered by saying he would fight for much less then Smith demanded. So Canelo negotiated with Saunders who was reasonable about the money and they worked out an agreement to fight for less then Smith. Smith priced himself out, Saunders didn't so he got the fight. Why would you send another offer to Smith when you have another fighter willing to fight for less? Smith overplayed his market value it backfired and he got nothing.

John Ryder is a serious threat to Callum Smith.

Callum is yet to fight an actual opponent with a pulse. Canelo has been fighting one-dimensional flat-footed guys - BJJ is not going to let him plant his feet and fire shots - horrible match up for Canelo. I hope Canelo doesn't try to take Steroids/PEDs and actually makes it to the fight.

Saunders lost his belt and was suspended for PEDs that are 10X worse then Clenbuterol which is found in the meat in Mexico at levels that is no longer considered a failed test as VADA has changed their testing to take into account meat contamination levels for Clenbuterol which Canelo had. But let's hear the experts explain the difference in what Saunders took

Saunders vacated his belt before he was already going to be stripped. He was suspended and hasn't looked good since he can't have his special spray anymore

The unbeaten former Olympican will likely be stripped of the WBO middleweight championship after failing a voluntary drug test

Nothing against Smith, but outside of England, NOBODY knows who he is. If he wanted to be a real international star in the sport of boxing, he should her jumped at the chance of facing, and defeating Canelo. How does he or his team think they have any bargaining power against the sport’s biggest star. Fight him. Beat him, or have a good showing, and all of the sudden the world will know your name. Or just continue to be one of those guys in The UK who happens to be holding a belt.

And Canelo is a threat to Smith, that's why you guys were asking for retirement money to fight Canelo.

It seems to me that Callum Smith overplayed his hand. I could see if he never got an offer in the first place but he received one and rejected it. Sometimes opportunity only knocks once and Canelo doesn't have to wait for anybody.

Benavidez slaughters this guy & everyone else at 168. Should run it back & clean up that mess he made with Ryder. His rep really took a hit with that "win".

From Smith's performance against Ryder, nope, not much chance he could beat Canelo.
