Wouldn't give him an A, don't think his moustache is on the level of the other A graders i.e Carlos Palomino, Jose Napoles and Alexis Arguello, his is more B+ next to Wilfredo Gomez

Everytime I read or hear the name Pinklon Thomas I remember the beating Holyfield put on him. Not sure why, I just do.

He had a good jab though and was a decent fighter.

First time I ever seen him was on one of those young heavyweight shows on HBO. The featured prospects Cooney and Greg Page. Thomas wasn't supposed to be part of the show but someone pulled out and they found Thomas in the casino at 2AM and asked him if he wanted to fight the next day. He fought Bobby Jordon and tore into him for five rounds til Jordon could not continue. A show that was meant to highlight other "up and comers" left the audience impressed with an unknown.

I just watched this fight last week for he first time since I watched it live all those years ago. I agree about it being a coming out party for Thomas.
I remember watching it on a 12 inch cheap black and white tv in my room. lol

Personally I think his moustache coasts along to A on H2H merits.

Pinklon was a talented fighter who didn't fight enough of the elite IMHO.He did beat Witherspoon, Weaver, and Ratliff, along with a unprepared Tillis, though.I always rated Page, Dokes, and Witherspoon higher.

He's a boxing coach now, and he is still in phenomenal shape.

I read Taking on Tyson, which was made in 2006.

He was helping out to a center that kept people in check and off drugs. Providing counselling, a helping ear, etc. Right for him to do so too, after the Tyson fight he drove to LA and into South Central. He visited a crackhouse and didn't sleep for 2 weeks whilst he was there. Heading into LA he was even in a carlane where gang members where robbing people but they noticed him cos of the Tyson fight and let him leave with his valuables intact.

He had been off the drugs for over 10 years when he book was published, hope he still is. In the book he went to a boxing match and people still asked for his autograph

I read somewhere that Thomas had a problem with drug addiction and got clean before winning the title.

I remember reading a thread in NSB a long time ago, about one of the posters actually meeting Thomas at a gas station. I think it was a fairly good thread.

Pinklon Thomas was a very good fighter when he had his head on straight. A true throwback to the fighters of the golden era of 60-70's heavyweights. I remember Angelo Dundee saying before his fight with Mike Tyson "Mike is a great fighter but not on the level of a Pinklon Thomas. When he is focused and in shape he's one of the best"

Obviously we watched Mike Tyson dismantle him, but I look at that as more a testament to the greatness of Mike Tyson and not that Pinklon Thomas was not a good fighter.
