Problem with double ended bag

Hey guys!! I have a question about the double ended bag. How are you suppose to hit?? I thought you aren't suppose to hit it to hard. If this is correct it seems like everytime I try doing that I hit it to hard and feel like I'm not accomplishing anything on it.

your not suppose to hit it real hard. its used for defense,eye coordination, and speed.
