The California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) wants four fighters to move up a weight class after competing at UFC Fresno earlier this month.
UFC bantamweight star Marlon Moraes and three others were flagged by CSAC doctors after weighing in on fight day well over the commission regulations of staying within 10 percent of the contracted weight, per a document obtained Friday by MMA Fighting.
Iuri Alcantara, Davi Ramos and Luke Sanders were the three other fighters recommended to move up. CSAC will not license the four fighters at their current weight classes in the future “without extensive medical documentation from a licensed physician certifying the weight class is appropriate and verified by CSAC physicians.”
Moraes gained 14.5 percent back after weigh-ins, coming in 155 pounds on fight day after weighing in at 135.4. Alcantara went from 135.4 at weigh-ins to 154.6 on fight day, a 14-percent gain. Sanders went from 135.6 to 154.5, a 14-percent gain.
Ramos had the largest difference between weigh-ins and fight day. He gained back 15 percent, going from 155.8 at weigh-ins to 179 on fight day.
Moraes defeated Aljamain Sterling by highlight-reel, first-round knockout at UFC Fresno on Dec. 9. The win, his second straight, cemented his place among the top bantamweight contenders. But CSAC wants him to move to featherweight. It remains unclear if other commissions will honor California’s recommendations.
Moraes, 29, did take the fight with Sterling on about three weeks notice after Sterling’s original opponent, Rani Yahya, withdrew.
Earlier this year, CSAC doctors said UFC lightweight Drew Dober must move up in weight after he was 18 percent above the weight class at UFC 214 in July. He did not fight again in 2017.
The commission recommended Invicta FC bantamweight champion Yana Kunitskaya move up to featherweight after coming into fight day 15 percent above the division in September. She, too, did not fight again in 2017.
At UFC Fresno, Ramos defeated Chris Gruetzemacher by third-round submission; Alcantara fell to Alejandro Perez by unanimous decision; and Sanders was finished by Andre Soukhamthath via second-round TKO.
Also on that card, CSAC moved up a flyweight fight between Alex Perez and Carls John de Tomas to bantamweight, because de Tomas “significantly” above 10 percent of the contracted during fight week. Perez, too, was 10-percent above the weight class, the commission said. Perez won by second-round submission.
