Looking back, Oscar beat Pernell 7 - 5

Pernell was a great fighter but I do think he was quite overrated. His defense was stellar but his offense was above average. I wouldn't favor him against Kostya, Floyd, Manny, Mosley, Crawford, Duran, Thurman, Hearns, or Wilfred. You have to have a perfect balance and Pernell never had that to me.

I remember thinking Whitaker won when I saw the fight originally. However, Whitaker was my favorite fighter so I might be a little biased.

I agree. I think Oscar won a close fight by throwing and landing more and harder punches in over half of the rounds.

I liked Whitaker but I always felt McGirt won their first fight by a very narrow margin. I always respected Pernell because he never ducked anyone. Fought the best, got jobbed versus JCC, and easily one of the top 5 all-time defensive fighters while in his prime.
