  • The try to explain Tony Weeks Inconsistency Thread

earlier in the fight(round 2) weeks had warned ward for low blows when he hit kovalev with a low punch on the bottom half of the belt. then later in the fight he hits him in the same area and kovalev looks to the ref like wtf that was illegal earlier but weeks says keep fighting?

also the 3 low blows at the end were all clearly lower than that first initial low blow weeks warned ward for so how could it be a tko? can you explain this inconsistency?

how is the ref able to change his standards mid fight? how does a punch go from being illegal in round 2 to legal in round 7 and 8?

also isnt it logical that kovalev would appeal to the ref since the ref earlier said it was low? isnt it logical that kovalev would think the same punch or even a lower punch would be deemed low? why are we blaming kovalev for having an inconsistent ref? why not blame the ref?

please try to answer these questions without saying "they werent low" since we know they were low according to round 2 Weeks himself. Maybe round 8 weeks is a different guy? did his evil low blow loving twin replace him between rounds?

Maybe he couldn't see them clearly because Kovalev was bent over and had his hands at his mid section. You have the advantage of having a camera angle that gave a good view, he didn't. When stood up it's hard to see what's happening when the guy is bent over, his whole body is blocking the view.

There's been many camera angles and only 1 shows 1 shot clearly low. It's not a stretch to say he couldn't see.

Weeks remembered that before the fight he said that area was legal and clearly made a mistake calling the blow low in round 2. he made sure not to make that mistake again. This explains the tko-Weeks knew he messed up early and didn't want to make the same mistake again. That's what great refs do.

Kov was looking for a way out after the right to the chin. When Ward landed the body shots after, Kov, remembering the mistake Weeks made in round 2, tried to goad Weeks into making another low call to stop the attack. Weeks, to his credit, realized he had made an error earlier and let the fight go on as he should.

We are blaming Kov because, just like broner with Maidana, it's the boxers fault when he overacts on a borderline punch to try and get the opponent DQ'd because he is kicking your ass. We can blame Weeks for his mistake in round 2 but to his credit, he corrected it later in the fight. That's all we can really ask of him. Thats why pencils have erasers and this forum has an edit button.

If what you say is accurate - and the same blow was judged inconsistently -

then the manner in which Kovalev "appealed to the ref" would also be inconsistent.

Logically speaking. This is why you hear the term "wanted a way out" "hopes the ref would stop it". Because the manner in which he appealed to the ref was that of a broken fighter being beaten - and it wasn't from nut punches that got Kovalev to that point.

The facts is Kovalev turned his back multiple times and stopped defending himself. This is why the fight was stopped. Period.

You need to stop crying now.

Excellent point! A number of posters have pointed out Kov's reaction wasn't one of someone that got punched in the nuts.

Weeks knows he made mistake. He should have given kov time to recuperate or point deduction.
At worse for kov the ref should have warned kov not to play act and get on with fight

There is no excuse other than the commission being corrupt and Tony Weeks being paid off. This doesn't change the fact that Andre Ward was putting a legit beatdown on Sergey Kovalev and punishing him with legal punches. This ending done more good for Kovalev than Ward. Ward was heading towards a conclusive stoppage victory.
