  • White: Ferguson next but if he turns down fight, Khabib vs. McGregor 2 makes sense

The fifth time might be the charm in the seemingly cursed fight between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson.

After four previous attempts to put the fight together fell apart due to injuries and weight-cutting errors, UFC president Dana White declared Ferguson as next in line to face Nurmagomedov for the lightweight title following Nurmagomedov’s win over Dustin Poirier on Saturday night.

“Yeah he’s next. Tony Ferguson is next in line for the fight if he accepts the fight,” White said at the UFC 242 post fight press conference. “We’ll see how this thing plays out when Khabib will fight again and if Tony wants the fight.”

Ferguson has won 12 fights in a row and he made it clear prior to UFC 242 that he wanted to face the winner of Nurmagomedov vs. Poirier.

Of course, White tossing in the possible caveat of Ferguson not accepting the fight seems to throw a wrinkle into the long awaited showdown against Nurmagomedov happening with 100 percent certainty.

It seems highly unlikely Ferguson would actually turn down the fight but negotiations would still need to take place before any potential title shot against Nurmagomedov could be set in stone.

If the worst case scenario happens and Ferguson doesn’t end up with the shot against Nurmagomedov, White likes the idea of former two-division champion Conor McGregor returning for a rematch of the most profitable fight in UFC history.

“Tony Ferguson gets the next shot and obviously if for whatever reason Tony can’t take the fight or doesn’t want the fight at that time then we would figure out what was next but Conor would make a lot of sense,” White said.

“Conor McGregor wants that fight really badly and I’m sure the fans would want to see it. So we’ll see how this whole thing plays out.”

McGregor has been teasing his return to action before the end of 2019 as he recovers from a broken hand suffered in training earlier this year.

He’s made it clear that a rematch against Nurmagomedov is the fight he wants most and McGregor is willing to travel to his opponent’s home country to get it.

“Book my rematch for Moscow,” McGregor wrote on Twitter:

For now, McGregor remains behind Ferguson in line for the next shot at the title but he’s already putting word out that he’s ready for a rematch against Nurmagomedov when the time comes.

It makes the most financial sense. Other than that, it's pretty ridiculous.

Conor really showed nothing in their first fight to show that he could do any better if they fought now. Sure, ring rust can be a valid excuse for his bad performance, but he hasn't fought since then so he won't be any sharper or less rusty. Losing to Khabib was his only fight in three years.

Khabib beats Conor AT LEAST 99 times out of 100, for Conor to be able to compete he needs to go back in time about 20 years and train wrestling every day, and he does not deserve the fight. If they skip Ferguson again the fans will riot, we've had enough of the bullshyt.

I think Khabib beats Tony, but Tony is certainly more of a threat than Mcgregor will ever be - and Khabib is bringing in the Russian market, the middle eastern market AND the muslim market - what does Tony bring? Even Mcgregor found out the hard way that you ain't shyt compared to the numbers and the market size that Khabib can reach.

Mcgregor, if he is serious, just wants another massive payday regardless of swallowing another L - match Conor with Poirier, Gaethje, Aldo, Holloway and/or the Diaz/Masvidal winner. (BTW, Diaz has outgrown LW and filled in nicely as a WW, Mcgregor ain't winning that trilogy now)

Im telling you all, White is doing everything he can to keep Ferguson away from his guys Khabib and Mcgregor. White doesnt want another Henry Cejudo running around the UFC.

              Conor still didn't win.

It was a No-Contest at best.

Triple C is an act. Ferg is legit nuts, but idk that Dana gives one f#ck about letting a crazy guy winning a title.

Letting Ferg fight at all after all the crazy sh^t he supposedly did is a bad sign. Plus that football guy they got & are big hyping right now along with the kid f#cker they had on the roster a few years back suggest Dana gives no f#cks.

LOL are you new to MMA?

Diaz was already a Welterweight when McGregor met him. Khabib would have never beat Diaz. It's hard to pick Khabib even against Alvarez, who'd make him work SOOO hard for those takedowns, and punish him severly for every failed attempt.

Conor was two years out from the decaptitation of Alvarez when he met Khabib. In that time he was training for Mayweather. If he'd taken on Nurmagomedov instead, it would have been the Lightweight Division's take on McGregor-Mendes.

conor's wrestling is his weak point. But the dude has always won against the odds.

His training partners for the Khabib ifgt were a jujitsu guy and lines of Cocaine. Clearly not the appropriate preparation. Other than Penn and St. Pierre, there hasn't been anyone as naturally talented a fighter as McGregor. Too bad for him it came way too easy.
