  • Whose 49-0 is truly greater? Mayweather or Marciano?

Now that Floyd has finally managed to tie Rocky's record of 49-0, it does raise the question of whose 49-0 will be remembered as greater in history- Rocky's run at Heavyweight or Floyd's run at multiple lower weights.

Rocky attained his 49-0 in the 1950s as a 190-pound man fighting in the Heavyweight division, brutalizing much bigger opponents before becoming the Heavyweight Champion of the world. Throughout his career he achieved a stunning knockout ratio of 87.75 percent, which was for a long time the highest KO ratio in Heavyweight championship history.

Floyd on the other hand attained his 49-0 by steadily moving through 5 divisions in the lower weight classes and defeating multiple world champions in some of boxing's biggest ever super fights, in the process establishing himself as the #1 Pound-4-pound fighter of his own generation as well as the undisputed Pay-per-view king.

Rocky's biggest wins: Joe Louis (KO), Archie Moore (KO), Jersey Joe Walcott x2 (KO), Ezzard Charles x2 (KO).

Floyd's biggest wins: Manny Pacquiao (UD), Oscar Dela Hoya (SD), Canelo (MD), Miguel Cotto (UD), Diego Corrales (TKO).

Both men have beaten Legends in the sport. Rocky P4P was one of the most ferocious KO artists in boxing history- his punches have broken arms, sent front rows of teeth flying, and common opponents claimed he hit even harder than Joe Louis. But Floyd, while not a KO artist like Rocky, is a defensive wizard who has never been officially knocked down from a punch, while Rocky has been down several times.

So, whose 49-0 is truly greater? Which is more impressive- moving through several lower weight classes, or winning the heavyweight championship?

Lets keep it civil but real guys

    Rocky Marciano
    51.67%

    Floyd Mayweather

Rocky's biggest wins: Joe Louis (KO), Archie Moore (KO), Jersey Joe Walcott x2 (KO), Ezzard Charles x2 (KO).

Floyd's biggest wins: Manny Pacquiao (UD), Oscar Dela Hoya (UD), Canelo Alvarez (UD), Miguel Cotto (UD), Diego Corrales (KO).

It should be noted that although Rocky won his fights in much more brutal fashion then Floyd, he himself has been knocked down and hurt several times in his career. Also, Rocky stopped at 49-0 due to a plane accident while Floyd is stopping by his own choice.

Whose 49-0 do you guys prefer?
Really tough question! Gotta think about it for a day or so!

Floyd Mayweather, as much as I despise the guy and put him second place to Manny- has still achieved a closely tied best record of any boxer of all time to date in the latest and perhaps most elite era.

Conversely, Rocky Marciano was champ of perhaps the weakest era of HW boxing ever (all the best potential fighters were eliminated in the war) and in that time never once fought what we would today regard as a "decent opponent" even at lightHW!

        Absolute joke thread!

their were fighters who went way passed 49-0 and they could have quit (like mayweather) at anytime and have a better record than mayweather.

Champion in the era of Ezzard Charles, Joe Walcott, and Archie Moore is the weakest? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHA!!!!!!

            But for real.

            Boxrec:

Archie Moore #1 p4p all time.
Ezzard Charles #4 p4p all time.

            Weakest era...

              Floyd has not beaten legends.

Even Oscar is not a legend. Ezzard Charles and Archie Moore are legends.

Tough question, names like Moore and Charles, not to mention Walcott and an old Louis stand out more than most on May's resume, including DLH, Cotto and Mosley. The greatest name on Mayweather's resume is Pacquiao and he had a chance to fight him, prime for prime. He purposefully let that chance go.

Marciano though, didn't exactly face the best versions of Charles or Louis or Walcott either but and this is a big but, there was nothing he could do about that. He faced them when he was a title challenger and they were some of the leading fighters on the planet. He can't be blamed for their position as fighters. However , it weakens his argument as one of the truly upper tier ATGs or ATG hws.

So I guess both guys are in a similar boat.

One guy fought in more title fights, against more world champions, across more divisions, at a longer period of time. One guy is the ONLY undefeated five division world champion. So I'll have to go with him.

How many title fights did Julio Cesar Chavez have at 49-0? How many titles did Marciano have at 49-0? This comparison is ridiculous in the context of Floyd. An old Joe Louis. That's like referring to Baldomir or Mosley in regards to age differential. Nostalgic love for the real facts at hand.
