Are you talking about something similar to a check hook?

Yes but coming forward so the natural action of the left hook while stepping forward is to pivot you a bit and same goes when you connect with it, be it to their head or glove, again you will naturally want to pivot some more.

Also you arnt bringing your bodyweight directly onto an incoming straight punch.

You could argue that if you have a left hook like RJJ you can throw it any which way you want and write your opponent a letter to tell them it's coming, and it'll still connect.

Unfortunately, I'm guessing most of us don't.

The block then counter left hook wouldnt work because youd be off to the side and out of harms way.

Also regarding speed, if you have a guy a fair amount slower than you then you can employ Roy Jones Jr tactics, you dont have to be the fastest guy in boxing history to use his tactics. Infact some of them dont require a speed advantage at all. People underrate Roys skill and unorthodox technique, because it not text book and because of his athleticism, but hes a bright guy and a master of his trade, dont underestimate RJJ in any way!

Good points. I will go back and watch some RJJ fights to study.

Surely Mayweather leads with the left hook a lot. He seems to grab afterwards.

Go deeper...A lot of time Mayweather leads with the hook after he's jabbed the guy to the body a few times. He ain't just leading with hooks randomly. Typically, he's doing it for a reason or because he sees or created opportunities to do it.

                Yes, surely.

I assume the same applies to Jones?

Guess that's the answer then. It's ok to do so long as it's set up right.

sorry but it is really bad advice, all u have to do is look at roy jones later career when he was roid free ( yeah truth ppl don't cry or get butt hurt) and lost all his natural reflexes, why was roy gettign ko'd and out boxed by lesser fighters later in his career??? because he lacked basic boxing fundamentals, ei: a good jab for a start, once the advantage of speed, reflexes went he got caught, countered, looked average..and the drugs being stopped could have played a part, probably did, but that is irrelevant, because whether he went down hill from stopping PED'S or naturally, the same problems would have caused his decline, lack of boxing fundamentals is what let later career roy down big time, and if u always lead with the hook, a child would figure u out in a roiund or two...jab most important punch in boxing
