You need to differentiate between great singer and good voice...

      IMO,
Cobain, Kiedis and Stipe have interesting signature voices, but aren't necessarily terrific singers...

Axl Rose has the most distinctive voice from those you've mentioned, but he also sings really well when he wants to...

Eddie Vedder has a sweet baritone voice but he's also a great singer...(Throw Layne Staley, minus the baritone, in that group as well.)

Chris Cornell is a better singer than all of them, but the basic tone of his baseline voice is not as good as many others, but his upper range head voice is a Elite sound...

      Back to topic,
I think the height doesn't matter nearly as much as the practice put into the craft... Taller or non-munchkin singers like Freddie Mercury, Lou Gramm and Paul Rodgers are very good singers with good sounding tone to their voices... (I think Sam Smith is six foot two, but that's another genre.)

There is no easy way to become a great singer... It's like a bodybuilder or a boxer, natural talent and genetics can only take you so far, after that it's the hard work in developing the skills and strength... No untrained bodybuilder or boxer we'll ever perform better then a seasoned rival with years of hard work and experience under their belt, no matter how naturally gifted they might be...

The same goes for singing.(Or any instrument for that matter.)
The voice is a series of muscles that need to be mastered and developed, breathing and diaphragm control also plays a part...
You might be born with a great sounding voice, but the hard work put into developing that voice will separate them from the rest...

      Cheers 🍻🎤

so many voices to choose from and height never entered my mind....

                midge ure (ultravox ''fame'') - 5' 6''
                seal - 6' 4''
                steve perry - 5' 7''
                caron wheeler (soulIIsoul) - ???
elizabeth fraser (cocteau twins) - ???
                ben e king (drifters) - ???
                stevie wonder - 6'
                jimmy gnecco (ours) - ???
                leona lewis - 5' 7''
                among many many many others.

each, imho, actually hit proper notes (soulful/pop voices ?). these voices wouldnt necessarily work in heavy metal/country. those voices have their own criteria....''screaming'' and a ''twang'' would take precedence over technical correctness and respect for proper notes.

a few notable voices that i dont consider pleasant -
99.9999 % of all heavy metal ''singers''
                bob fncking dylan
                macy fncking grey
                lou fncking reed
                tom fncking waits
                fncking kesha
                katy fncking perry
                fncking beyonce
                every fncking auto-tuner

i dont care how ''good'' or ''popular'' they or their songs are, you couldnt pay me to listen to them. as with most things, its a preference. some consider voices like mariah careys and whitney houstons (rip) to be too commercial. no feeling. only a gravel/booze infused voice can convey a story worth singing. to each their own.

the way to tell if a person is as good as we think they are, listen to them live. minus the studio wizardry.
