  • Is 2019 the worst year in the history of British boxing?

I don’t think anything like this has ever happened before...

Tyson Fury- Delays rematch against Wilder to fight lesser competition.

Anthony Joshua- Knocked out by huge underdog.

Dillian Whyte- Fails drug test after accusing others of being dirty.

James DeGale- Embarrassed by Chris Eubank (another Brit so props for that) to end his career

John Ryder- Misses a chance for his biggest fight ever against Lemieux when Lemieux is injured

Kell Brook- Seems like he isn’t fighting until it’s Khan

Amir Khan- Quits in a PPV fight against Crawford and announces a made up fight against Pacquiao before announcing a potential list of opponents crafted on planet delusion.

Anthony Corolla- Obliterated in his title shot against Lomachenko

Isaac Dogboe- Destroyed in his rematch against Navarette

There's more. Especially bad year for developing prospects, which were built up to become headliners.

Josh Kelly - Draw against an opponent who he was supposed to look good against, (little) hype that was there is gone now.

Jordan Gill - Looked pretty solid in his build up so far, but was broken down against a tough mexican journeyman.

Anthony Fowler - Olympic medaillist, was supposed to get past fitzgerald and hearn probably had high hopes for him.

Ted Cheeseman - fan favourite, limited, but his fan friendly style allowed him to headline smaller shows. badly outboxed by sergio garcia.

and from end of the last year:

Lewis Ritson - had started to become popular. busy fighter, down to earth and relatable fighter, was taking out british competition with ease, but wasnt able to clear european level.

This place was FLOODED with UK fans a few months ago. Now, it's mostly just the spammers left and a few of the true boxing fans that live over there.

No love for Rocky Fielding for his scintillating performance against Canelo?

This bubble was always going to burst at some point.

I’m probably one of the few Brits who is actually happy that some of the frauds are finally being exposed.

You can add Callum Smith’s momentum being completely wasted as another low point. Eubank beating DeGale isn’t though, that’s a high point if anything, Eubank is the far bigger name/draw over here.

There have been some good moments though: BT have produced some good fights in Warrington-Galahad and Dubois-Gorman which was a refreshing matchup, and our most talented fighter (IMO) Josh Taylor became a world champion. And for the fans that actually attend shows we got to witness guys like Inoue and hopefully Loma in a month or so.

It has been a pretty poor year overall though. Taylor beating Prograis will hopefully restore some honour though haha.

All those you named were only being hyped up by the casuals or Matchroom fans aside from maybe Kelly who appeared to have some skills until he stepped up the levels. I mean someone like Lewis Ritson was getting outboxed by Tamuka Mucha in the ABA’s, anyone who truly knew their boxing over here knew he wasn’t anywhere near the level the Sky Sports puppets were suggesting.

The only legitimate top level prospects from my perspective are Dubois, Buatsi, Cordina and Lee McGregor.

Poor Brits. They really rallied behind the Aj n Special ed duo. They became cancerous after those two rose to some sort of Boxing prominence. Now they’re being crushed. Americans remain top dogs in the sport at higher weights. Mexicans and Japanese and South Afrikans are top dogs at lower weights. Brits just want their foot in the door somewhere. They’ve never had a hypejob as big as AJ though. At the height of his popularity Brits thought he was better than Lennox Lewis.

Very similar to the vast majority of years in Brit boxing history, actually.
