Ive always wondered why there are somany sanctioning bodies in the sport? and when did the other ones spring up? and why? how did boxing go from one champion per weight class to as many as foour or five. Is it true that the WBA was the first sanctioning body?

The WBA was the first sanctioning organization, know then as the National Boxing Organization. And the reason so many have popped up is simple...money. It's basically "pay us" and we'll call you a world champion whether it is legit or not. More weight classes means more sanctioning fee's from more fighters wanting to be called champion. Between all the weight classes and all the orgs, its the reason boxing has lost so much of it's popularity.
