It depends for me - I do conditioning workouts 3 times a week and sometimes use sprintwork as a conditioning tool, sometimes not. For example, sometimes I'll run intervals for all 3 of my conditioning workouts, whereas other weeks I'll do none. However, I get a 5 mile low-intensity run in every Saturday night, as I feel it helps me get my head clear and put the pieces to the puzzle I've learnt during the week into place. So basically I use long distance work as a mental rehearsal tool rather than a conditioning one.
