EA SPORTS™ Fight Night Round 2(update)....
December 07, 2004 - Cover curse? Ray Lewis might not be feeling any adverse affects from Madden (not yet, at least) but Roy Jones Jr. suffered through the worst year of his career after being on the cover of EA Sports Fight Night. How will new cover athlete, "The Executioner" Bernard Hopkins handle his role as spokesman for Fight Night: Round 2? Well, if he deals with it like he dealt with the pressures of facing Oscar De La Hoya, then he'll deal with it with both fists blazing, and in the end, dancing away with all the gold.
When facing Hopkins in virtual form, though, not only will gamers not feel the pain of every punch, but they will have a host of new moves to try and knock out the champ. From haymakers to the ability to stick and move, not to mention a cut-man mini game, Round 2 looks like a second-round knockout for EA Sports.
IGN Sports caught up with Kudo Tsunoda, the Executive Producer of Fight Night, to get all of the details of the game that dethroned the King.
IGN Sports: Boxing has changed a lot in the past year, from Roy Jones getting knocked out to Bernard Hopkins owning all. How has the lineup in the game changed to reflect that?
Kudo Tsunoda: We have all of the top boxers in all of the weight classes. In the previous version, we didn't have as many big boxers in all of the weight classes, but now we tried to add a lot more depth. We've expanded the roster by seven or eight new boxers, so we're up to about 40 boxers overall and we have pretty good coverage across all of the weight classes as far as the big names. We went out and got Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, two guys we didn't have last year. We also signed Miguel Cotto, who is huge right now, and Ricky Hatton who is the top fighter in England right now. We also added Diego Corrales.
EA ANNOUNCES BERNARD HOPKINS AS THE COVER ATHLETE
FOR EA SPORTS FIGHT NIGHT ROUND 2*
12.7.04 – Get ready for the ultimate knockdown! Electronic Arts announced today that Bernard Hopkins, the Middleweight Champion of the World, will serve as the official spokesman and cover athlete for EA SPORTS™ Fight Night Round 2*, scheduled to be released in March 2005.
Nicknamed "the Executioner," Hopkins is hailed as one of the world's best fighters after defeating Oscar De La Hoya in September 2004 to claim the belt for the Middleweight Champion of the World. The Philadelphia native's career record includes 45 wins, two losses, one draw, and one no contest with 32 knockouts.
"It's great to be immortalized in an EA SPORTS video game and even a greater honor to be an EA SPORTS cover athlete for the most realistic boxing game ever created," said Bernard Hopkins. "Being a fan of the series, Fight Night Round 2 really captures the intensity and excitement of the sport, but without the pain."
EA SPORTS Fight Night Round 2 continues to deliver innovative gameplay via the analog Total Punch Control mechanic, allowing gamers to throw multiple punches, block, bob and weave with complete precision and control. Packing in more fearsome punches, players can now dominate the ring with the all-new EA SPORTS Haymaker allowing gamers to knock down their opponents with one devastating blow by adding extra power to each punch. Every hit counts in the game with powerful punches inflicting dynamic injuries on opponents, and thus reducing a fighter's ability to defend himself. Players will also manage the boxers inside and out of the ring. Utilizing the new EA SPORTS Cutman, gamers can minimize damage on their fighters by helping them heal critical wounds between rounds.
