7.62x51 vs. .308 was not a big issue here. everything is 308 here. gun and ammo. unless you get military surplus 7.62x51

.223 vs. 5.56mm was bigger problem.

because it was opposite of .308 problem.

the 5.56mm was more powerful than the commercial .223

plus when they switched to 62 grain for 5.56mm, it was incompatible with the rifling twist of original .223 designed for 55 grain

.223 or 5.56, the best ammo in my experience is the Sierra 77 grain, but twist should be 1:7.

62gr is also good but the flat trajectory of the 77gr is superior.
