philippines is a friend to america.

it's not like philippines would spit in america's face like kick them out of military bases, protest american troops training our soldiers or buy weapons from other countries even though they give us weapons for free.

They are giving us pittance. Uncle Sam needs us as strategic location to check on China. The purpose of empires for conquering our country since time immemorial was to use the Philippines as strategic location to penetrate China in terms of trade. The sleeping dragon is becoming so big that there need to be a move to immobilize it.

what do we give to countries poorer than us? we shouldn't complain how little charity we might get. it's certainly large enough that we don't turn it down.

vietnam is no good, that could involve fighting on the ground which the u.s. would want to avoid. and as much vietnam hates china, i doubt they'd take sides with millions of chinese troops across the border.

thailand and malaysia is u.s friendly but probably would want to stay politically neutral.

if not philippines, the "wall" so to speak, would go up around japan, south korea in east asia and oceania, concentrating in australia and new zealand. maybe even taiwan if they get bold.

but you're asking the wrong question.

you're asking where if not philippines.

you should be asking why philippines?

aside from geography we don't have much to offer. and if the u.s. decides to limit the scope of their influence? our geography is useless to them.
