my new story
Without a doubt Ultimate Warrior was my favorite wrestler of the 80's/early 90's, and maybe still my fav of all time. Now I know with his recent and not so recent comments he is not the most popular person in the world but this is purly based on the Warrior character, As it should be . With the self destruction DVD came a lot of questions on how he should be seen as a legend and I will break it down a little . First of all I have not seen the whole DvD yet but I have seen about 90% of it so I will speak on only what I have seen from the DVD and from my own time of watching him.
First of all he has been attacked based on his promos and interview skills. Here's the problem the Warrior charactor was never ment to be a good speaker . The whole image was based on a wildman from parts unknown .Are there schools in parts unknown ? If he would have been well spoken it would have hurt his charactor development based on fact that a savage warrior should not be able to cut a perfact interview in the first place .
[Stars & Rocket Ships] Again he is attacked for being to far out and insain . He would speak to the 'gods' mid match and you never really knew what he was on about ....again this is the hole point of the gimmick .
[Parts Unknown] On the DvD they joke about Warrior being from parts unknown . Why ? Was Warrior the first to use Parts Unknown ? The answer is NO , many wrestlers have used this as part of a gimmick in the past and every so often you still see someone use it. If he was billed from 'oh lets say Illinois' It just wouldn't work with the image .
[Lack of ring skills] Oh yeah but Hogan,Luger and countless others had a great move set right ? ...Again his gimmick was a brawling brute a Ultimate Huracarana wouldn't exactly look right now would it . He should have had a better finisher i'll give you that but overall he was not that far off of the Hoagan's and Luger's .
[Comic Books] I'll just say NO wrestler should EVER EVER come out with a comic book ever again. .
[Longevity] Yes he was a letdown but with the way that Vince kept messing with his gimmick can you blame him ? The Warrior got his fans by using the crazy, wildman, gimmick but as soon as he was pushed to champion WWF had him lose his paint and act like Hogan . Why ? As I said he made his mark by using this gimmick why change it now ? Is there a rule that the champ has to be a normal man ? They should have let him stay the same as he was the fans would have still loved him and it wouldn't matter . What hurt was that after Hogan left there was no real challenge for him he had beat Andre,Savage,Rude,Earthquake, ect, in the past which made people lose intrest .
My feeling is that you should only judge a entertainer based on how well they entertain. What he says I do not always agree with but I understand the imagery of the Warrior that he tries to convey . I feel that he is truthful about most of his dealings with Vince and wwe based on wwe's past history with wrestlers . And I do feel that he was wronged by being fired due to absence for his fathers funeral. Vince justifies it by saying that Jim /'Warrior' /Hellwig was not on good terms with his father . But IMO due to this fact Warrior may have been in even more grief over his fathers death because of the broken relationship . If they had been on good terms he would no have the guilt that he most likely felt during this time .........Well in closing Warrior is and always will be the most memorable wrestlers of my life . No matter what happens in the sport I can always look back to the days when I was young and the warrior was the most powerful man in the world . Ps. Boy do I miss the kayfabe era.
