MEXICO CITY—She was a crusading Twitter journalist in a bastion of organized crime who chose a photograph of Catwoman as her online avatar and christened herself Felina. Like a comic-book avenger, her alter ego defied the forces of evil in her real-life Gotham of Reynosa, a border city in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas located a short drive from McAllen, Texas. Tamaulipas is notorious as a state caught in the iron grip of organized crime. Extortion, kidnappings, shootouts, arson, bodies excavated from arid pits, all of this happens in Tamaulipas, practically on a daily basis, but hardly any of it gets reported because of a media blackout the cartels decreed four years ago that is as strictly enforced as martial law after a coup.

Two rival drug cartels in Tamaulipas, the Gulf Cartel and the Zetas, have final say over what gets printed or broadcast in the local media. By necessity the people of the state increasingly have turned to social media to share information about organized crime and its infiltration of the government. They are referred to as citizen journalists and have received international attention for their innovative use of sites like Facebook and Twitter to defy the imposition of the blackout.

I hear ya but I disagree. Isis wants to spread Islam across the world, their battle is over ideology. Cartels just want money and for their business to run smoothly. They do not want any restrictions, and if there is, clearly, they can be as brutal as Isis.

thats exactly the difference. There is only violence in cartels because they will kill anyone that get in their way to make the mighty dollar or Peso

And both of them are just as terrible as each other. Just different goals. They get their point across exactly the same.

ISIS are trying to make their own state, the cartels are already running their own country. It's easier to influence others with money than religion thus why ISIS are going about it a different way. Both are drunk with power and are trying their best to control those that go against their crusades.

Think about it for a minute, there isn't much difference in how the two operate. Through terror and fear... much like the media. That's why you have everyone running scared of Islam but not batting an eye lid at Christianity.

2 different goals yes they both kill and want power just cause they have those 2 things in common doesnt mean they are almost the same. One of the main reason media doesnt cover cartels like they do isis its because US is the one who is feeding these cartels. All there weapons money cars and everythign is from the US. Us can cut ties but they love the drug supply too much
