I started the year off by putting bout $200 in and I had a real good week NFL up to about week 10, then had 3 bad weeks in a row before rebounding. I made about $700 overall during the year, mostly betting on the spread. NFL is hard to bet on though, usually NBA is easier to at least keep your money.
In terms of how most people can make $ gambling though, cards are usually better. Sure you can lose more, but if you win, you can win A LOT more on a table then with your slip of paper, unless you're making high bets with a decent amount of risk.

now, if you're playing online poker with real money, even at a low stakes table, and you regularly clear out tables and finish in the black then you are probably a good poker player.
i played a lot in college. maybe once a week. started in high school, but really didn't start to understand the game until i started to play with better players. chris moneymaker, an accountant and basically a novice poker pro, had just won the world series of poker after winning a satelite tournament for the 5000 entrance fee. he won several million dollars in cash. the game blew up basically overnight right as i was exiting high school.
Side note: I still keep a stack of poker chips on my desk at work that I shuffle *all* day long, lol.
now if i'm at a casino i'd rather just play [lose at] blackjack. poker tables amount to a ton of sitting around.

If it's something that interests you, check out the "Knockout" card counting system for blackjack. It's super easy to learn. Not quite as complex as the hi/lo system. It'll take care of that "losing" at blackjack, at least some of the time.
