I know it might hurt your feelings to know that communism and socialism are crap. Puerto Rico and Greece are both clear examples of this but like I said before some people just don't learn.

Now compare the United States to Cuba and tell me which country is better. I'll give you a hint: It's the country the Cuban risk to life to flee to.
I am not advocating communism, I am simply making a point that capitalism doesn't always work. Cuba will obviously never measure up to countries like the States, Canada and the rest of the super powers but who is to say that Cuba under capitalism will be better. As a matter of fact, it will be a complete and utter mess. The transition period alone will make all of Cuba swim across "shark infested waters" to reach the U.S.

Dude, I've provided you with facts about Cuba based on first hand experience. I've provided you with facts from the World Bank and the UN.

Is Cuba the best place in the world, absolutely not! Is Cuba the worst place in the world, absolutely not! And for its region there are many more worse places than Cuba.

Now if you want to talk more about Cubans literally going through "shark invested waters"

          read this: Swimming With Sharks

-This week, 64-year-old long-distance swimmer Diana Nyad successfully completed the 110-mile swim from Cuba to Florida. While most of the media coverage focused on her perseverance (this was her fifth attempt), a great deal of it emphasized the supposed danger she faced from sharks. NBC News, ESPN, the Chicago Tribune, and NPR included the phrase “without a shark cage” in the first sentence of their coverage

Why weren't people risking their lives and families fleeing from Batista?
Look bro the reason the US gave all those Cubans the green light to come here and receive asylum is this.

You have to understand what was going on back then. America was in a fight against Communism with Russia, Vietnam and any country that had communist tendencies. Cuba fell to Castro's revolution and he in turn took up communist policies. With the threat of having a country so close like that and also being heavily backed by Russia in every way. They were a major threat to the US. The US knew Cuba was a super poor country. So it was a political move by the US to open their doors to Cubans and offer them a better life in America. And doing so would destabilize the country and soften the threat of them. Which it did. If the US had opened their doors the way they did when Castro was around but did it when Bautista was the leader, Cubans would have fled for a better life too. Bautista persecuted thousands of cubans.

Why doesnt the US open their doors to mexico? Well they are not a threat to our way of life the way Russia and communist were. If Mexico provided the same problem to the US as Cuba did back in those time. I guarantee the US would open their door to get any mexican to side with them and soften the threat. But that is not the situation with mexico so they are not offered an open door policy.

Your right it'll probably be a disaster switching over to capitalism but Cuba could have been a super power with the right leadership. Cuba was doing better than countries like France in terms of employment and wages before Castro took over and would have more than like switched over to a democracy under Batista.

In 1960s, the Jamaican dollar was stronger than the US dollar. Don't make assumptions about how a small nation would have done against the ebb and flow of the world economy.

                    • People who don't know history are such absolutists...Japan closed their damn island for 200 years and then caught up with the world inside 40...who's to say the collective mind/culture that was developed during that time didn't prepare them to face the new world better? right now, the nordic model is where it's at, but every damn model will keep evolving. If anything, the biggest danger right now as a species is all about the strength of our weapons(mutually assured destruction)and overexploitation of resources due to overpopulation and greed...
