Message boards allow anonymity.
Look at Sherdog/The Underground for MMA, those forums are HUGE.
Look at Reddit, it's more of a factor than Facebook imo. I don't know anyone who goes on Facebook on a personal level for Boxing or Boxing news. It's usually Reddit/Twitter or traditional message boards.
This forum is not where it once was because Boxing is in a transition phase imo AND it has been replaced slowly by the likes of Reddit, growth of MMA/MMA forums and of course Twitter/Facebook have played roles too.
I think message boards like this still have their role though, definitely.
