Vinci was lucky as she played one less match than Serena. Vinci was supposed to play Genie Bouchard but Genie took herself out of the competition when she fell in the locker room and ended up with a concussion. Vinci may well have lost to Bouchard but never had to play and ended up being fresher for her match against Serena.
