According to Steve Kerr on 2k13 lebron is the greatest athlete in the history of sports.
I think the best athletes in the world are ball players anyway there just so much going on at once that requires pure athleticism it's crazy

the best pure athlete in the world is lebron james. speed, strength, size. that's what athleticism is. that's all it is. it's basically an evaluation of movement.
he's 270 lbs and he's 6'9". you foreign guys don't even understand size like that. he moves/runs like an animal, and i mean that in a good way. it's completely effortless. from basket to basket he's the fastest man in the nba. he can jump out of the building. he's one of the league's best passers. and he's 6'9" and 270 lbs.
He relies on team mates.
Best athlete in the world are Tennis players who are fit and play 5 hours of tennis a game if needed. They play 5 or 6 games to win a title.
They play tournaments every 2 or 3 weeks.
They have physical strength to hit a ball at 130+ MPH.
Have quick reflexes to return balls.
Have agility to run and change direction in an instance.
They need to be very fit and have extreme stamina.
They need to have decent durability because Tennis strains the legs, knees, shoulders and arms a lot.
They need huge mental strength because it's all down to them.

Will try find source
Edit: ok it was over 10 meters and it was his own trainer that said it. Ill take that with a pinch of salt. Point is tennis players have very good acceleration.

Soccer players will always be at a disadvantage with 'best athlete' talks because 90% of being a good footballer is about mental aspects. Being able to process information, touch, judging distance, reactions etc. A running back in Am Football gets picked on some of those things, but a lot more on physical athleticism.

2) Gareth Bale-Dude is a C7 in the making. Only 23, has even better pace imo, if he works on his leaping ability for headers i think he could equal ronaldo.
3)Novak DJOKOVIC-Dude literally slides aroun d on hard courts, with incredible endurence. Beat Murray in a 5 hour eopic then beats nadal in a 6 hour, beat that???
4) Wladimir Klitscko-Guys a freak. 6 ft 7, moves as a light heavy. His co-ordination when he throws his righ hand is incredible and his biceps are colossal.
5)Messi- He may no be as Atheltic as Bale or Christoano ronaldo, but with the ball no ones got quicker fit, hes a bullet when hes dribbling.
Honourable mentions are GEORGE SAINT pierre and ronnie olsulivan.
but he's not on the same planet athletically as guys like LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Cristiano Ronaldo, Aaron Johnson or Rafael Nadal.
