I've only dated those who have called themselves "christians", but religion in no way or form affected their lives. Only reason my gf calls her self a christian is because her parents told her she is and its basically tradition.

I wouldnt date something with strong religious beliefs

So he invented god to answer them. I think there is a "god gene" and man is predisposed to create something greater than himself. We love ritual and pageantry in one way or the other.
Great explanation by a usually reserved and quiet man Paul Dirac, one of the greatest Physicists of all times.

I cannot understand why we idle discussing religion. If we are honest—and scientists have to be—we must admit that religion is a jumble of false assertions, with no basis in reality. The very idea of God is a product of the human imagination. It is quite understandable why primitive people, who were so much more exposed to the overpowering forces of nature than we are today, should have personified these forces in fear and trembling. But nowadays, when we understand so many natural processes, we have no need for such solutions. I can't for the life of me see how the postulate of an Almighty God helps us in any way. What I do see is that this assumption leads to such unproductive questions as why God allows so much misery and injustice, the exploitation of the poor by the rich and all the other horrors He might have prevented. If religion is still being taught, it is by no means because its ideas still convince us, but simply because some of us want to keep the lower classes quiet. Quiet people are much easier to govern than clamorous and dissatisfied ones. They are also much easier to exploit. Religion is a kind of opium that allows a nation to lull itself into wishful dreams and so forget the injustices that are being perpetrated against the people. Hence the close alliance between those two great political forces, the State and the Church. Both need the illusion that a kindly God rewards—in heaven if not on earth—all those who have not risen up against injustice, who have done their duty quietly and uncomplainingly. That is precisely why the honest assertion that God is a mere product of the human imagination is branded as the worst of all mortal sins.

Why does he/she believe in a GOD, and how old is your child?

I would bet almost anything that your child believes in a judeo-christian god because you and the people around her are brainwashing her into it

Thats pretty much the way it goes for most People who grew up Christian who no longer believe in it.

Its just easier to go through the motions as opposed to catching all the bs parents, friends, colleagues give on e they find out you don't believe in that stuff anymore.

Luckily, you don't have to worry about this.

You see, we're not the ones collecting donations and evading taxes to build colossal churches and signs advertising our beliefs to the general public.

We're not the ones who go from door to door attempting to convert people.

We're not the ones with our own television network from which we engage in global fear mongering by telling everybody that they're damned unless they believe as we do.

We're not the ones who claim to know with absolute certainty that we're right.

              But I digress.
Oh man that has to be the stupidest thing I've ever read. The way you tell it religion must have been started by God because no human could ever become curious on his own? If that's true no human could have started it. Nice job owning yourself then.

Exactly. When i taked about having kids with my GF, she said she would have her kids baptized and christened. It got me me pretty pissed because she has no idea why those things are even done. I then countered that they are also having bar mitzvahs

It's about finding someone with a similar outlook on life. I am an atheist, but have dated girls who believe in God.

Naturally, girls that go to Church every Sunday and Wednesday are pretty much out of the question, but that's not just because they go to church. It's that going to church every week is just an indication of a thousand differences in our values and culture. I have nothing against religious people in general. There are good ones and bad ones as with anything in life. I like going to Church with friends here and there as long as the preacher isn't full of **** or talking about giving (money to them).

My Mom always said she'd love and support me regardless of my path in life as long as I didn't become a Political Lobbyist or a Muslim. If my kids find God then that's great for them, but I am on a different path to find the answers in my life.

I don't think they make those.
