You get hit with any serious Magnum round, you're going to have a bad day. But there is a practicality factor involved as well.

There are very nice CCW that are in 45 ACP, which is an even bigger bullet than 9mm and .40:

All it takes is practice and getting to know how to handle your gun with many types of ammo. I highly recommend you practice with self-defense ammo too if you're planning to CC.

If you ask me, I'd highly recommend you get an 9mm first, makes the learning curve even easier when it comes to different calibers.

Is it for home defense? Take a look at:

    Glock 19.
    S&W M&P 9 2.0
    Sig Sauer P320.
    HK VP9.
    Springfield XDE.
    Ruger Security 9.
    FNS 9C.
    Walther PPQ.

Is it for CCW? Take a look at:

    M&P Shield 2.0
    Walther PPS.
    Springfield XDS Mod 2.
    Glock 43/26.
    Karh CM9/PM9.
    Ruger American Compact 9.

    For home? This in .40:

    CCW? This in 9mm:

And safety on a gun can be a two-edged sword.

I think Glock knows their audience when it comes to having none on their weapons.

Most people who are experienced at CC rather have none.

A one second delay could be fatal when you're about to defend yourself.

I have a friend who uses a special bag to carry his CCW, doesn't have a bullet in the chamber and has the safety on.

Does that sounds smart to you? I think not.

I carry IWB with safety off and bullet in the chamber.

    Hope that helps
Can't say I disagree here either tho.......

        Good stuff here.

With the advancements in bullet design and construction over the past decade or so, the 9mm is probably perfect for just about everybody. Barrier blind rounds, decent expansion and penetration, and a fairly mild round to shoot out of even sub-compact joints like the G26.

Cant go wrong with a quality 9 handgun as a self defense choice.

          What about Walther PPQ?
Brother in law has a walther ppq m2

Says it's the best trigger out of all the striker fired pistols

Slightly edged out the sig p320 in his opinion

I have a p320 so I know how good the trigger is

What do you think of the lack of safety feature on glocks?
Doesnt matter how powerful a gun is if you miss.

Anything from 9mm to .45 acp will do the job.

The top hollow points in 9mm luger, .357 sig, .357 magnum, .40 s&w, .45 gap, .45 acp will do the job.

.32 acp, .38 special, .380 acp, 9x18mm makarov will do "okay" and bare minimum in power needed imo

10mm Norma,. 41 magnum, .44 magnum and up and you're talking a lil bit too much for self defense. The extra recoil and report is not worth it. Unless its self defense against animals.

End of the day just remember that ALL HANDGUNS ARE WEAK compared to rifles. Soldiers complain about the stopping power of rifles, handguns will be even less powerful.

With handguns, gotta score multiple hits. Dont expect 1 hit to do it. Train to get multiple hits.

Safeties on guns is a preference thing imo.

The real safety is your brain. Whether a gun has a safety or not, the guy handling it is more important factor to it not going off accidentally.

              I think hes from California

Most of those guns are not available here

Out of your list only the glocks (3rd gen only, no late models like g43), shield and some kahr are available

Think I talked to you about the VP9 and the P30SK.

Why do we live in this weenie-ass state again?

                I want them.

But from "sources close to...', I'd have to pay nearly double the market price.

Not paying 1000+ for a polymer 9, pare.
