Buffalo bore and Underwood specialize in higher pressure, higher velocity, heavier loads


After winchester Silvertips and federal hi shocks (pretty standard jhp back then late 80s-early 90s)

I switched to heavier loads like federal hydra shok and winchester black talons

Stuck with that til the 2000s when new tech ammo came out

Been using speer gold dots and federal hst since

But I'm about to switch pretty soon

I'm loading up for ammogeddon

Gonna load up on Remington golden saber black belt

If the results on the new federal hydra shok deep is good, gonna get hydra shok deep too

Dont know much about that ammo

I try to stay away from specialty bullets

I like to use more conventional hollow point designs and I like to use big name brands, known brands

But they also have a section where they tested a lot of self defense ammo

Surprising how so many hollow points barely penetrate or doesnt expand at all

Look for a bullet that expands 1 1/2 times its diameter

FBI recommends 12-18 inch penetration in gelatin

I like rounds that penetrate at least 16 inches or more

Rather have penetration that expansion

When buying self defense ammo make sure you get 12-18 inch penetration

And as far as expansion 1 1/2 times diameters

So 9mm/.38/.357/.380 you want expansion to 0.53-0.54 inch.

.40/10mm expansion to 0.60 inch.

.44 you want expansion to 0.64-0.65 inch.

.45 you want expansion to 0.67-0.68 inch.

Golden sabers all did well in a lot of calibers

Whether regular, bonded or black belt golden sabers


I dont think the hornadys did that well

But my bro in law uses hornadys

He uses both critical duty and critical defense

Front got stuffed and barely expanded in the tests

0.355 bullet only expanded to 0.43 inch
