Frankly in society where "good people" have little access to guns they generally have less need to "defend themselves" because violent crime is less prevalent.

There are too many factors to make that statement imo. For instance, we are in a full fledged war against drugs, unlike other places, which this alone creates a dangerous black market, resulting in many gun incidents.

Statistically/historically, legalizing/decriminalizing drugs makes murder rates and such drop quite a bit.
