Himmler probably had more to do with the Holocaust than Hitler did. I don't believe it was a state sponsored genocide, and I don't believe 6 million Jews perished (were there even 6 million Jews in Europe at the time? Most censuses say no). The Final Solution was, theoretically, more likely one of mass deportation than genocide, however I do believe high ranking Nazis like Mengele and Heydrich were definitely cruel and took advantage of their positions, and that many communist and generally subversive Jews were executed. Most of the deaths will have been from starvation and disease, though. Tragic, but these were times of war, remember.

The 6 million figure dates back to the Torah and the Allied post-war "denazification" of Europe, a mass propaganda campaign which has coloured our history books ever since.

The Second World War was not as black and white as we're led to believe, nothing in reality is. It's childish to think of Nazis as simple cartoonish villains, even if you do oppose their ideology. The Allies were no angels themselves, lest we forget Dresden, Hiroshima, Nagasaki, the ensuing chaos after Russia took East Germany, etc. Painting WW2 as a clash between good and evil is a gross simplification and misrepresentation of the war.
