theres some technique too

like he grows the hair around the side of the mouth to add extra support to the curl. you can see on the daniel day lewis pic he also has it growing well past the edge of his lips, so it adds support to the curl.

then you have to trim up the upper lip and grow it long at the edges

and for a while you have to wax and comb it to get the hairs trained before they start to make a decent loop.
