People always tell us (non Americans) that California, New York and the Chicago area of Illinois are 'not like America' or 'not really America'.

As you know I used to be a PhD student and have met folks from across the USA and was wondering if you guys reckoned this to be true?

Are the sea bordering territories (+ Chicago) different from the 'US heartland'?

Honestly it has to be Texas.

A big desert with nothing to do, riddled with crime/disease/unjust law.

America is different wherever you go. It's noticeably different from one side of a state to another. Very diverse place.
