Why do people consider "eating watermelon or fried chicken" racist when it's stated?

Watermelon and Fried Chicken are one of the most delicious foods I've ever had the pleasure of enjoying.
But, there is a long standing racial prejudice that ties these foods to blacks. The presumption that all black people are predisposed to get weak in the knees every time they see these foods is a popular misconception perpetuated by racism.
Comic strips from the 1920's would illustrate a black caricature with huge lips, and tattered clothes, munching on a wedge of Watermelon, and some seeds, making him look like some sort of zoo attraction that belongs in an encyclopedia.
