  • 49ers to work out Culpepper
    Jason La Canfora

Published: August 14th, 2011 | Tags: Daunte Culpepper, San Francisco 49ers

Former NFL quarterback Daunte Culpepper is scheduled to meet with the San Francisco 49ers on Monday, according to a league source.

Culpepper, scheduled for a visit and a workout with the 49ers, is seeking a return to the NFL and has been contacted by several teams.

As I wrote about last week, the level of interest in Culpepper has been slow going thus far, and the presuppositions of some teams regarding Culpepper’s health, conditioning and ability to practice have surprised the former Pro Bowl quarterback’s representation.

Culpepper, 34, played for the UFL’s Sacramento Mountain Lions last season after 11 seasons with the Vikings, Dolphins, Raiders and Lions.

    • So they sit out free agency and then start talking to a UFL quartback. Great.

              • According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, Frank Gore may demand a trade soon.

Gore wants DeAngelo Williams money, and the 49ers don’t want to give him anywhere near that.

So, let’s suppose Trent Baalke has two options – show Gore the money or trade him. Which should he choose?

Frank Gore has been a great 49er, but we’re talking business. Bill Walsh always traded a player a little before people thought he should – he didn’t wait.

                http://49ers.pressdemocrat.com/2011/...paign=br_49ers

What could Baalke get for Gore? A first-round pick? A pro-bowl cornerback or offensive tackle?

Does the emergence of Kendall Hunter and Xavier Omon make a Gore trade more plausible for the 49ers?

I’m eager to hear your thoughts.

If I were Baalke, I’d trade Gore. Gore could bring back a fortune.

There will be a 2 o’clock conference call with Jim Harbaugh, and he surely will be asked about Gore. Whether he’ll answer, I don’t know.

                • They should just start Culpepper and or pick him up for 1yr. Smith sucks and nothing will change, he can go to Belichik and he will still suck. Just like Campbell.

Niners should have made a push for McNabb because the only thing they lack, just like Oakland is a quarterback. I figure Harbaugh is looking to mail in this season and draft Luck.

Trade Gore. He isn't going to make the difference in the next few seasons anyway. If Harbaugh is rebuilding then he may as well toss the guy that wants out and see what he can get for him. No ones expecting a good season from the 49ers anyway.

Sign the damn UFL guy, whatever. Just get Alex Smith out of there. I'd rather have a guy that's bad at the start but has potential to improve, then go another season with a guy thats time-and-time-again proved that he can't improve.

SAN FRANCISCO -- San Francisco police were seeking witnesses Sunday to the shooting of two men and the severe beating of a third in a restroom at Candlestick Park, as city and league officials condemned a rash of attacks and brawls that marred the annual preseason football game between the Raiders and 49ers.

The most severely injured victims from Saturday night - a 24-year-old wearing an anti-49ers T-shirt who was shot, and a 26-year-old who was beaten - were listed in serious condition at San Francisco General Hospital, suggesting they would survive.

Meanwhile, video footage of fights between fans at the stadium popped up on YouTube, showing a chaotic and dangerous scene at an event that drew tens of thousands of fans.

Investigators did not announce any arrests, but did detain a "person of interest" in one of the shootings, said Sgt. Michael Andraychak, a police spokesman. Earlier, officials described pulling the person, who wore Raiders apparel, off a party bus in the stadium parking lot.

In the beating in an upper-level bathroom, police were looking for a man described as a Samoan or Pacific Islander in his late 20s, with a goatee and a ponytail, who stands more than 6 feet tall and weighs more than 220 pounds. He was last seen wearing a white T-shirt and blue jeans.
                      Police defend security level

Police defended the level of security at the stadium. Andraychak said city officers join 49ers staff to provide security at all games, but typically add extra officers when the team plays the Raiders, due to the rivalry.

Exact numbers aren't disclosed by policy, he said, but the level of security at a given game depends on factors including how many people are expected to attend and who is playing.

"I can't explain human behavior and why people get into fights," Andraychak said. "We believe we had sufficient staffing for the event."

The violence was roundly condemned on Sunday - by the National Football League, the 49ers, the Raiders, and Mayors Ed Lee of San Francisco and Jean Quan of Oakland.

"Violence will not be tolerated in either of our stadiums," the mayors said in a joint statement. "Fans come to our stadiums to enjoy an afternoon of football, not to be subjected to intimidation or violence." They promised full prosecution of whoever was responsible.

The 49ers issued a statement calling the violence "disquieting" and pledging, with the NFL, to cooperate with law enforcement. Amy Trask, the Raiders' chief executive officer, called the incidents "not acceptable."

All expressed sympathy for the victims and their families.

Police said they didn't know what prompted the shootings or the beating, and couldn't say whether fan rivalry played a role.

The beating victim, who police said was from San Rafael, was knocked unconscious in an upstairs restroom during the game.

Shortly after the fourth quarter ended just before 8 p.m., a man wearing a "F- the 49ers" T-shirt was shot several times in the stomach in the stadium parking lot, police said. He was initially listed in critical condition.

The second shooting victim, who suffered superficial wounds to his face, was shot in a separate area of the parking lot.

"We're treating them as two separate shootings," Andraychak said.
                      Widespread violence

The violence tarnished the only game scheduled between the Bay Area's football teams this year. And it echoed the attack in March on Giants fan Bryan Stow at Dodger Stadium, which left the Santa Cruz paramedic with a traumatic brain injury.

Two suspects have pleaded not guilty in the beating, which raised questions about security at Dodger Stadium.

At Candlestick, the violence on Saturday appeared to be widespread, occurring around the stadium and parking lot during and after the game, several fans said Sunday in online postings.

"We saw at least seven major fights and heard of others that we didn't see," said a fan using the handle "raidermomo_1964" on SFGate.com. Another fan, "littlecat8," wrote that "it was difficult to enjoy the game" because of the many fights.

One video posted on YouTube showed several fans wearing 49ers and Raiders gear brawling wildly in the stands before other fans broke up the melee. Another showed several women pulling each other's hair and punching one another in the parking lot. That brawl left at least one woman lying on the ground, where she was helped by friends.

"Where the police at?" a passer-by wondered out loud in the video.

The violence is certain to reignite a long debate over fan safety that has, over the years, prompted changes such as limits on alcohol consumption.
                      Stadium security better

Steve Adelman, an attorney who represents stadium owners, said neither the violence at Dodger Stadium nor at Candlestick Park make football games a dangerous choice for fans. Many stadiums, he said, have upgraded security and installed more lighting in parking lots in recent years.

"If anything, stadiums are doing things better," Adelman said. "So the next issue to look at is, well, why are these incidents occurring?

"Maybe we need to look at individual behavior. People are taking their loyalties, aggressions and willingness to use weapons to a level not seen before."

The 49ers and Raiders, because they are in different conferences, have met just a dozen times in the regular season since 1970, a matchup sometimes called the Battle of the Bay. Each team has won six times.

But the teams have made a tradition out of playing in the preseason. In the game Saturday night, the 49ers won 17-3. Last year's preseason game between the rivals went off without incident.
