The numbers are an indication that Apple may be feeling the competitive pressure of Windows PC vendors, such as HP and Dell, which have cut prices at much larger percentages.

Apple Macs in U.S. retail stores fell behind Windows PCs in sales growth last month, an indication that Apple's strategy of charging more for its critically acclaimed design may be showing weakness in the economic downturn.

In-store Mac sales, including Apple stores, was flat in November compared with the same month a year ago, while sales of Windows PCs rose 7%, according to The NPD Group. The biggest drag on Mac sales was the desktop segment.

EMC (NYSE: EMC) acquired Data Domain in early July. Director of InformationWeek Analytics discusses the implications of the acquisition and data deduplication, including some of the industries that the technology is most appropriate for.
Sales of Mac desktops plummeted 38%, while Windows desktops were down 15%, NPD said Tuesday. Overall, the desktop market was down 20% from a year ago.

Nevertheless, Apple saw a drop in its share of overall units sold in retail stores. The company's share fell to 15% from 20% in October and 16% a year ago, NPD said. Apple's desktop share fell to 15.8% from 17.4% in October and 20.6% a year ago.

Overall, the numbers are an indication that Apple may be feeling the competitive pressure of Windows PC vendors, such as Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ) and Dell (Dell), which have reduced prices at much larger percentages than Apple to boost sales in the economic slowdown, analysts say. In addition, a new category of mini-laptops, or netbooks, with prices as low as $300 also may be having an impact, particularly in the education market.

The PC industry as a whole has certainly felt the impact of the world recession. Market researcher IDC this month slashed its 2009 PC revenue forecast, saying the market would fall by 5.3%. The analyst firm had predicted growth of 4.5%.

He's never even used a Mac.

He's just trying to get attention. Everyone knows Mac's are superior in every way.

PC's are the computer equivalent to food stamps.

Just enough to get you by.

Apple shares surge on huge Mac sales

            Wednesday, July 22, 2009 - 05:28 PM EDT
"Apple Inc. jumped 3.5 percent in Nasdaq trading after price cuts attracted more first-time buyers for Macintosh personal computers last quarter, helping sales and profit top analysts’ estimates," Connie Guglielmo and Brian Womack report for Bloomberg.

"The company sold 2.6 million Macs, beating the 2.4 million predicted by Shaw Wu, an analyst at Kaufman Bros. in San Francisco. Sales of the iPhone also topped estimates," Guglielmo and Womack report. "'The Mac sales were huge,' said Wu, who recommends buying Apple shares and doesn’t own them. 'Their business continues to hold up really well.'"

Guglielmo and Womack report, "Apple posted a 12 percent gain in sales and a 15 percent increase in third-quarter profit, even as other technology companies cope with waning demand from consumers and businesses," Guglielmo and Womack report. "Apple, based in Cupertino, California, climbed $5.23 to $156.74 by 4 p.m. New York time on the Nasdaq Stock Market."

Beleaguered Dell’s earnings plummet 23% as sales fall across all of its business areas
                Thursday, August 27, 2009 - 04:46 PM EDT

"Dell Inc. on Thursday reported a fiscal second-quarter profit that fell 23% from a year ago as sales fell across all of its business areas, and the computer giant also gave mixed signals about its outlook for the rest of the year," Rex Crum reports for MarketWatch.

"Dell said it earned $472 million, or 24 cents a share, on revenue of $12.76 billion. During the same period a year ago, the computer-industry giant earned $616 million, or 31 cents a share, on $16.4 billion in sales," Crum reports.

MacDailyNews Note: Beleaguered Dell sure works hard for its meager profits. Revenue of $12.76 billion to eke out only $472 million. Nice margins. A race to the botom will do that to you. FYI: last quarter, Apple earned $1.23 billion on revenue of $8.34 billion. In other words, 2/3rds the revenue to generate 3 times the profit.

Crum continues, "Dell's release slipped out with out three minutes before the market closed, giving the company's shares a boost of 98 cents, or 6.7%, to close at $15.65 a share. However, in after-hours trading, the stock was off about 1%."

Ffs. Macs work fine for what they do, but do you really care that they have lower levels of PCPs in the wiring, and lower levels of murcury in the screen? The last thing I care about is lowering my carbon footprint by barely anything froma laptop. I have a macbook, and the fact of the matter is I don't give 2 ****s about the aluminum used, it comes wih standard 2GB or ram, and a 160gbHD. You can buy windows based laptops that cost much more, and come with even more of that environmentaly friendly **** ****.
