65% of the mexican population is mestizo, which is spanish mixed with amerindian. More than half of mexico has spanish in them. 25% is predominantly amerindian and the remaining 10% is white, black, and other.

The only Mexicans I see like you and others are describing are when I watch Telemundo, other than that the ones i see/interact with have very similar pigmentation. I am by no means an expert on the ethnic breakdown of Mexico or being demeaning. I've been to Mexico four times, lived near denver(high mex. pop.) and see quite a few around here, that is all I am basing it on.
