  • what the ****???

i have spoke bout this before,my trainers teach to hold ur hands horizontal in a hook, and i dont do that,i hold it vertical cause i feel more power speed and comfort, thats fair enough aint it?i move my arm and throw the hook exactly the same jus with my hand held different, and i know i should listen 2 my trainer, but when i asked why he teaches that way,he says cause knuckles hurt more than fingers, cause apparently holdin it horizontaly makes ur knuckles connect, and vertical with it makes ur fingers connect?surely thats wrong,my fingers would kill and i always feel it connect with my knuckles, when i hold it horizontal i connect with my little finger, plus,im learnin 2 box not fight in the street,i have got a glove on my knuckles and fingers, its an equal pain cause its padded,i get the feelin hes trainin me 2 be a little bad boy wannabe street fighter,n im tryina get out of that

i dont know how to distinguish difference between vertical and horizontal...

i was told by my trainer for longer distance, keep fist facing down and shorter inside punches, keep the first towards you

I've always done the exact opposite.

I've seen both ways in practise however- I think Manny steward had Hearns throwing vertical for distance & horizontal inside; kevin randleman in Pride KO'd cro cop with a beautiful long distance horizontal hook.

The main reason I like going with vertical for long distance hooks is because if you catch the edge of the fist on a long distance horizontal hook you can really eff-up your pinky knuckles.

I get more power by turning my fist over...

            your trainer is right.

and also its important if your going to fight ammature, since its easier to throw inside punches which can lead to dq whan you throw vertical hooks.

You can get DQd in amateur boxing from throwing vertical hooks?

i've never seen it happen in competition or even heard of it before and I've seen my fair share of amateur boxing tournaments... Maybe the rules are different here?

Horizontal hooks can definitely get a lot of power in a smaller amount of space, which is why i like using them inside. Using them outside, I've had friends break their hands with horizontal hooks.

hold your arm out in the position it is in right before you contact with the hook Look at your forearm. the bones are in there twisted position when you throw the hook horizontaly, "thumb pointing at you" The punch looses some of its energy just in the twisting of that hook, the bones in your fore arm are no longer acting as proper support for your wrist. Use the hook verticaly. Line the impacting bones up so that they will be stronger and more powerful upon impact.

No offense but thats hog wash. Ive thrown the hook the same way since I hurt my shoulder in the begining of my career using the horiz posture.
I always use it thumbs up. The bones in your wrist and fore arm are lined up and more solid of an impaciting mechanism. You do not get dq'd for that.

It's the other way around. Holding your arm out in front of you like a hook, it's clearly more natural to have the thumb pointing down. You have to flex your forearm muscles to even get your fist into the vertical position. The wrist feels clearly stronger when the hand is horisontal, at least to me.

On a straight punch, turning the hand from vertical to horisontal gives the punch extra power and snap. When throwing a long hook, you can utilise the turning of the hand in the same way. It is also easier to land the punch clean on the knuckles in this way, when the opponent is at a distance.
