...pretty much every elite fighter (and some not so elite) Arum has lowballed has eventually left him and made exponentially more money.
DLH, Floyd, Cotto back in the day.
Chavez Jr had his biggest paydays after he left Arum.
Mikey Garcia is a legit ppv attraction after leaving TR.
Even Pacquiao, who made incredible amounts WITH Arum, saw a kind of improvement. His last 3 fights with Arum, he made no more than 34 to 42 million total. His last three fights without Arum, Pac has made at least 20 million from each of them...AND he's not paying Arum a cut.
And, there are others who left TR and flourished.
Yeah, I know what some of you are thinking.
Some of you are still on that "if Teo really thinks he can beat Loma, he should just take the 1.2 million!" refrain.
Hell, I am a fan. I wish he'd take it too. But, unlike some of you, I understand why he isn't and I respect where he is coming from.
Imma tell you what Teo sees.
He sees himself being offered a purse that is only 400K more than Crolla got.
He sees a split that is much less percentage-wise than any champion Loma faced at the weight.
He sees everyone crying broke about the pandemic- even going as far to say Lomachenko is taking a "pay cut"- yet to the best of my knowledge 3.25 million is the largest guaranteed payday Lomachenko has ever received. If I am wrong, feel free to post a link proving it.
Teo also sees Arum, who is worth 300 million, not giving enough of a shyt to come up with another 800K to 1 million to make his pay more respectable. It was a disrespectfully proffered offer by Arum, sent as "take it or leave it"- another hint and a half at where Bob was really going with this.
Lastly, Teo is likely trying to see whether ESPN gives enough of a damn to make sure that one of the best fights that can possibly be made is actually made.
I don't think this is about Lopez not really wanting the fight. And, it is probably about more than just the money. If Lopez is "the future" as Arum and ESPN love to hype him as, this is a strange way to treat it.
I believe this is Teo trying to see where he really stands as far as TR and ESPN, to what extent he is really valued when it isn't simply just about hype and rhetoric. And, if Lopez eventually leaves Top Rank, you can bet that this is where the exit started.
