  • Help needed: Home workout plan

    Hey

I started this year with a resolution to lose 70lbs, so far that's going quite well [down 22lbs]. My progress is all down to the fact I've found something I love [boxing]. I've never really been a sporty type, but I've really taken to boxing. It's not only improved my physical health, my social anxiety has improved drastically too. So much that I'm considering taking my first amateur fight in 6 months.

At the moment I'm training with my coach in a 1on1 environment twice a week, I'd do it every day if I could but my budget won't allow it. So the other 5 days I'm not sure what to do, I shadow box around the house quite a bit but as for an actual plan I'm really not sure. I read a lot of people say jogging, but at the moment my knees aren't great and jogging is one of the few exercises I've noticed actually makes them feel worse.

I'm willing to dedicate time out of my schedule every day to train, so whatever needs to be done to get myself ready is good! I have a heavy bag arriving next week to use in my garden, I also have another £50 which I can invest in some equipment for home use too.

    Thanks
    MH

I agree, walking is a great exercise.

Apart from that you can do bodyweight exercises. The workout from Joe Frazier's book is a good way to get started:

      3 or 4 sets of 25 pushups
3 or 4 sets of as many sit ups as you can do

You dont need to spend serious money. Do not underestimate the effect of the Push Up, its one of the best exercises you can do and its free and you can do it almost anywhere, if it gets boring change your hand position - Wide hand, hands together, fingers point out, fingers poitning in

Pushups, lunges, situps, Burpees (if the Knees are OK) in your own little circuit in the garden or front room for 15 mins everyday

If your looking to invest in some kit, buy a speed rope (£5) and get skipping, gets your heart rate up and gets you used to being on your toes. Chin up bar can be a good thing also (they are always on Gumtree/Ebay secondhand at £10ish)

If you have one of these trim trails in your local park id be all over that, light jog or walk between stations then the stations have good exercises that work your core.

Finally, get out and about with your exercises, it will stop them becoming stagnent and working out outside helps relax the mind

One thing that will help with your knees is taking glucosamine and chondroitin. together they reduce inflammation in your joints, and help lubricate them. I had knee pain when squatting because I've done bodybuilding for over a decade but that has eliminated it entirely.

As others have said there are many options for cardio. Shadow boxing, walking, swimming, elypticals, burpees and calisthenics. It just depends on what's available to you and what you enjoy. the best exercise is the exercise that you'll do.
