  • IBHOF - What would you change?

What would you change, who would you cut or add to The International Boxing Hall of Fame - in any category - and why.

    Here's the Inductee Index

The only thing would I change is whatever standards the boxing writers are using to induct fighters. Right now the standards for boxing seen low in terms of the fighters inducted compared to other sports. Looking at the categories I don't see anything that really needs to be changed other than the voting criteria.

I agree regarding the criteria, that is the key point.

My question was aimed with that in mind - which of those already inducted would you take out? and is there anybody you would add?

I would close it down. It is a disgrace. If you are famous enough, you do need a hall of fame. If you are not famous enough you do not belong there. Ali and Robinson are not a whit more famous or well off because of any Hall of Fame.

Is there a writer's Hall of Fame? This crap is only a way for someone else to line their pockets off boxers who have already been used to death. Do the boxers they enshrine get a cut? I rather doubt it. Their is no reason to "enshrine" punch artists anyway, it is sad and ridiculous. They are not Mary and Jesus in a forking tableau.

Oh, sure, let's enshrine Bob Arum and Don King. They deserve it as much as much as anyone. Build a gangster Hall of Fame for the forking promoters and crooked managers.

There. Not quite the answer you expected. We also enshrine Indian killers and everyone else with a bit of fame in this stupid world and country. Give it up. Wyatt Earp was a pimp and a murderer. Fame means nothing. It is a way of persuading the future to buy, buy, buy.

I see the catholic church, a two thousand year old monster, is about to enshrine someone new. Anyone they enshrine has a good chance of having been a child molester.

A Hall of Fame is important to the people who own it, in addition to boxers who not belong there even if it was a legitimate enterprise, which it is not.

Now tell me it is a charitable institution. That means they use some of the money for tax write offs, or they would not give away a penny of their profits.

I don't understand how a fellow like Gaspar "El Indio" Ortega is left out when Kenny Norton and simular fighters are granted in. Nothing against Norton but Ortega was an active fighter for many many years.
Ortega was a top ten welter for 9 years never getting his shot until late. This guy fought all over the world and was the most televised fighter in TV history.
He fought top men in the world winning and lossing but always making a great account of himself. He was the showcased boxer on Gillettes Cavalcade
          of Sports throughout the 50s & 60s.
He was stopped twice on over 175 bouts and his competition was the top tier men of both era's.
I am biased because I knew Gaspar when I was a young fighter and trainer he was a close friend with my older brother.
He now runs one of the youth boxing programs that I was associated with in the 70's, Hamden Youth Boxing, Hamden Conn.
A terrific action fighter and an even better human being.
My vote is for El Indio!

Gatti definitely shouldn't be there. I don't understand is how a fighter like Little Red Lopez had a hard time getting in but Gatti was voted in as soon as he was eligible. Something is wrong with that. I would also take out fighters like Bowe and Johansson.

Jose Torres probably shouldn't be there either and Jess Willard being in there is just laughable.

Edit: The fighters that I believe should be inducted based on who has been voted in would be Esteban De Jesús and Ernesto Marcel. Both deserve it far more than Gatti.

In general there is too much of a bias towards the heavier classes and the US and US based fighters - about half of the inductees in the modern category are from the US. There has been a quite ridiculous lack of Asian fighters. Hopefully they redress that in the future.

Very few asians have been good enough to elect. Big white and black men are not generally interested in midget fighters they could probably whip themselves. An asian heavyweight would do wonders. But unless the asian fighter is fat he would never weigh enough. Most asians are from Tinytown. A minute percentage of their population is large enough, too small a fraction to find that champion.
