  • Dick Tiger

Got a few questions for you here about him, where would you rate him with the Middleweights of his day? Where would he be rated today? How would you rate him at LHW? Is he deserving of any praise as an ATG (pretty sure the consensus will be no, but why not?) How would he fare in today's Middleweight and Light Heavyweight Divisions?

In his day he was a top middleweight, no doubt. Today he would be among the very best at 160, but I don't see him dominating. I think boxing historians generally rate Tiger very high. If he's not considered an ATG it is likely because he lost a lot of fights. Today he would fit best at 168. He was too small to compete with bigger lightheavies who don't have to make weight the day of the fight.

He's a Top 10 MW without question and he is absolutely unquestionably an ATG in general.

Beat HOF, top ranked opposition at 160, 168 (Benvenuti fight) and 175 and IMO is the greatest fighter to ever come from Africa.

And today, he would dominate the MW division and probably the 175 division also.

Can you imagine how quickly Chad Dawson's will would be broken by Tiger? And that's at 175 which really isn't his weight at all.

You guys think he's and ATG? A lot of people talk about him like he wasnt so great. I don't think he'd do so well at LHW, and with the middleweight top contenders today, he'd definitely be challenged.
I've never really looked at Tiger or analyzed his skill, but I do know he has a lot of heart. Somebody sub me to a fight that shows off his boxing skill

Not an ATG, IMO, but he'd be the best Middleweight in the world today.

                How so?

Tiger beat Giradello twice, Gene Fullmer twice, Jose Torres twice, Nino Benvenuti.

These are all legitimate HOF'ers. All with the exception of Fullmer in their primes. But Fullmer was still the #1 MW in the world at the time.

That's just the top of the iceberg.

                Other wins against legitimate Top ranked contenders;

                Don Fullmer
                Roger Rouse
                Spider Webb
                Terry Downes
                Ruben Carter
                Henry Hank
                Hank Casey

                And others.

Arguably won the first fight with Emile Griffith, very close fight.

One of the ATG chins in the history of the sport.

I that's not an ATG then I'm not too sure what is.

He had heart, chin, stamina, will, strength, skills. He was a very complete fighter.

He could fight going forward, backward, aggressively, pretty much anywhere.

He could force the fight for 15 rounds straight or he could outbox you for 15 rounds straight.

Inside he was awesome and he was also a very skilled counter puncher.

The fights to look at IMO for his skillset would be any of the Giardello fights. Any of them.

Giardello was incredibley skilled himself with amazing counterpunching ability, the ring IQ on show is very high.

To see a complete contrast, watch the final Fullmer fight where he see's Fullmer is wounded and takes it to him and beats the hell out of him.
