  • Hitting the heavybag without a break

Lately I've been doing that, I'll go straight through the break, hitting the bag for 20-30 minutes straight.

Is this good for building stamina or am I just tiring myself out unnecessarily?

I think you should also hit it really hard&fast so that you really need a 30-60 sec break after a 3min round....

if you can go 20-30 mins straight on a heavy bag with good power and pace that's very impressive if you're telling the truth

that would be very good for you stamina because in fights you always get a minutes rest between rounds.this way your fitness will be ahead of your opponents

Actually the longest I ever went was 28 minutes, not 30. I try to mix the pace up a lot. Hard punches, medium and pitty patty ones. The thing is not to let too many seconds go by without throwing anything. I figure as long as I'm throwing SOMETHING its still work. It's hard to describe I guess one would have to view me in action to judge.

its not good imo, not on the heavybag.

it teaches you to look for breaks in the action rather than better your stamina. if you really want to better your stamina go all out instead for as many rounds as you can rather than going for 28min straight at a measured pace.

i find it really hard to believe you are in shape to do solid work on the heavybag for 28min straight with no break, there are like 4 fighters in the world capable of doing that.

when you work the bag you should never take more than 3sec off, and there should be some snap to all your combinations. not every punch mind you but every combination should have some pop to it, you can throw some less harmful punches too but need to keep the speed up. but even the punches without full force should still be solid blows, solid enough to get the attention of your oponent and the judges, no pitty patting.

and its not just the power than needs to be turned on, the speed and technique needs to be sharp too.

if it works for you go for it, but it really seems like a very bad idea to me, i think it will do more harm than it will good and be a big waste of time and energy.

You could always mix it up as part of 'Dentist Training' (google it). Eg I do 2 BS Snatch and 6 Burpees non-stop for 10 mins then hit the Heavybag non-stop for ten mins, just an idea.

If you are a boxer though, hitting the bag for 20 mins uses the wrong energy systems. You wanna hit it for 2-3 mins with more intensity, speed and power and rest so you can do it all again! But for cardio (non-boxing specific) it's quite good!

not nesicerily (I cant spell!). He could be an animal that works ****ing mentally for 3 min bag work. if this was true all this top fighters would hit a bag non-stop but they dont.
