    Hey guys!
i never boxed a day in my life. however boxing over the past 8 months has peaked my interest. I'm not the most athletic guy out there but i could see myself really getting to like boxing. I'm 17 years old, 180lbs., I'm 5'7, and 17 percent body fat. In middle school i was one of the fattest kids and it was all fat no muscle. the next year i started running and eating healthy I managed to become one of the skinniest kids in the grade by the next year. going into high school I was 118lbs. and i decided that i wanted to start bulking up. I put on some fat but alot of muscle. by the end of my sop****re year I was 185lbs. I had put on so much mass that I had the football coaches asking me to tryout. I don't play any sports but I would like to start one. i've thought about what sports I could see myself playing and ones I'd like. and I think boxing is for me. when I was a child i did some form of karate and we would do alot of sparring. I wasn't that good but I really enjoyed it. half the time i got the **** kicked out of me and had to go clean the blood off the floor from where I got kicked in the nose. My goal is to start training and eventually get in the ring, the Problem is that i have no idea where to began. do I need to get a boxing trainer? or can i coach myself? do i need just a boxing bag or should i go to a boxing gym? I live in a small town where their isn't a whole lot of options to box at. im still in highschool and just looking to pick up a sport any advice helps thank you!!

    1. Having a trainer is a MUST if you plan on stepping in the ring professionally or as an amateur. If there aren't boxing gyms in your area then I would look go on this website http://www.expertboxing.com/ his advice an technique lines up with what I learned when I started boxing. Also, the key to being a great boxer is TECHNIQUE, TECHNQUE, TECHNIQUE. That should always be on your mind until it you can do it without thinking.

    2. If you can't get to the gym then any hopes of competing will go out the window. BUT, many great boxers started out "late" such as Sergio Martinez and Antonio Tarver.

    3. A good gym will have the owner there as a trainer most of the time or if it's a small gym then one trainer but if larger then multiple trainers.

    4. I would get your own handwraps and gloves. You can learn to wrap your hands at the gym by your trainer. I use Mexican Handwraps which work great. Your trainer will be able to teach you to wrap your hands and if they can't gtfo of there as fast as you can. There is no excuse no matter what which can justify him not knowing how to wrap hands.

    5. You don't have to get a heavy bag because they can be expensive but if you can't get to the gym for whatever reason then you should get one.

    6. If you learn at home on your own then the only people you should trust for technique are JT Van V and the guy from Expert Boxing. Aborb as much as you can from these guys before you go to the gym and find a style that is good for you, you need to try and get down to 141-154lbs for your height depending on your reach (wingspan).

    Good Luck

nothing is easy about boxing, not even finding a gym. As a kid I had dreams of boxing while living out on a farm nowhere near a boxing gym. We'd all throw the gloves on and just go at it. I'd throw with anybody, just as long as they were game.

next thing I know I'm in this new city where I knew nothin' about nothin'. Kid in school turns around one day and tells me that he's a boxer and that he's going to kick my ass. he told me to join the boxing gym and in the ring is where he'd put the hurt on me. I was excited to hear about a gym near by in this new place. I showed up and just went at it. Some incredible memories were gained through the next few years or so, I threw with anyone that was game..... anyone and everyone in the D. Got my ass kicked enough, kicked ass enough, it's just all part of the learning. The only limitations that you truly have are the ones that you allow to limit you.
