I am planning on having my first amateur fight in April 2014. I am not looking to make a career of boxing or anything like that. I love boxing as a fan and I enjoy sparring and working out as well. So I figured why not give it a shot. Worst case scenario is I get into great shape and lose the fight, best case is I do well and will always have it as an accomplishment.
I am relatively knowledgeable on diet and exercise however I want to get some more details/advice from people who have been here before.
I currently weigh 188. I want to fight at 175. Through a combo of healthy eating and exercise this should not be an issue. I am 6'1.5 so I should have a decent height advantage.
I currently spend one day on legs, one day on upper body, and one day on abs. However I do a little ab work every day no matter what. The exercises I do are ones that I have learned from pro boxers that I know or trainers so my concern does not lie there. A lot of the exercises I do are plyometrics. I also have one day a week where I do a rigorous plyometric course.
So that is what I do for building lean muscle. For cardio/weight loss I vary it up. I often run 5-7 miles per night. I also throw in some jump roping (20ish min) and heavy bag work. So for example, tomorrow I might do my leg routine, jump rope for 20 minutes, and then do 10 heavy bag rounds. The next day I might do upper body, run 6 miles, and then shadow box+light heavy bag work.
As far as technique goes, I work with a trainer who is a former professional fighter. I am also lucky to be able to do light sparring with an elite professional boxer. This allows me to work on good technique and combos as he is in very good control of himself and knows how much pressure to apply. I also spar with others and normally I do pretty well versus them.
I also do footwork drills and shadow box.
I think that is about it. I think this all sounds pretty good, but my issue now is time. I used to be able to dedicate 3 hours a day to the gym but now it is much harder for me to do that.
So with what I have told you, how do you think I should divide up my time. My concern is not so much what I should do, but when I should do it. I eat healthy regardless so I always have that working in my favor.
Thanks a lot for any advice.
