  • Question about cutting weight/rehydrating

I currently weight about 154 lbs, and I am 5'10. For my first amateur fight I wanted to cut down to 141 to fight at welterweight. However I was told that such a loss in weight for an amateur match is not ideal because you don't have 24 hours to rehydrate like the pros do. So, I wouldn't want to be drained and not perform well. At the same time, at 154 I feel sluggish and tense, because i'm not even supposed to weight this much, but some time off of training and a whole lot of junk food made it happen. I really should walk around at about 149. So I know I wouldn't feel right fighting at 152, especially against a bigger guy.

Is the move to 141 a good idea, and what's your take on the rehydrating issue.

Train and eat right to get to where you feel comfortable at 149 and fight at 152. Potentially fighting someone 3+lbs bigger isn't a big deal especially when the alternative is draining yourself to make a lower weight class.

You can't sweat out 8lbs and expect to have any energy fighting later in the day.

I agree. Cutting weight for this fight is obviously not the answer. If in the future you feel the need to fight at a lower weight class, loose that fast food weight properly by burning the fat. That'll get you closer to the weight class you want to be in and it is feasible to cut a FEW pounds before the fight.

Thanks, green K sent to both.

So you do feel in the future I can fight at 141 and rehydrate to whatever weight?

Because my first match is not until June, so I have some time to properly lose the weight.

In amateur boxing, you can't dehydrate more than a couple pounds, and that should only be a last effort if you just cannot lose the last pounds of fat.

Even if you lose all the fat and fight at 141 without sweating any weight out, you may feel weak, and you will find that you are training to make weight instead of training to fight. Much better to fight at a weight that you can make comfortably, and get to eat better and feel strong.

I understand what you are saying. I guess i'll get to 149 and fight at 152. I'll make sure I PM to tell you how it goes.

Talked to my trainer about it, and he told me that he doesn't know how going from 151 to 141 will affect me because i'm not that fat, but at the same time he advised that fighting at 152 is not such a good idea because at that weight, people will be cutting from 158 or 159 and they'll be able to take my shots better, and punch harder than me. He said that I should try to go to 141 and see how I feel.

So i'm in a dilemma... I might just go to 141.
