He asked the same question I would have. Hopkins had just beaten Trinidad and was in a posistion for some major fights, yet, he's facing some guy who couldn't beat Hopkins if he were twins.

That was a legitimate question. Hopkins always craved the publics attention and respect; and there's nothing wrong with that....as long as you're fighting the best and not some guy named Morrade Hakkar.

It was a perfectly legitimate question, given the context of then-recent events. Journalism isn't about asking easy questions. It's about asking the ones everyone wants to know; but don't have the balls to ask......that's Larry Merchant.

No need to respond further to this. It's not even an objective argument. Gunstar isn't even dis*****g disliking white fighters. This means dude made a point about Merchant being a "racist *******" and then HE HIMSELF engages in the same activities for which he called Merchant racist.

I think we ALL see who the real racist is here: Gunstar1

Larry Merchant adds nothing but nonsense to the HBO broadcast. I'm so glad that at least some of you agree that he's annoying.

What makes him qualified to be on the broadcast? He's never boxed (which I'm glad PBF pointed out, even though PBF talks a lot of nonsense himself), in fact, he's never played any professional sport whatsoever, has he?

Anyone who has boxed knows that there's a big difference between training and not training, or being inside the ring and being outside the ropes. Why do we tolerate these so-called "boxing experts" when they have no actual experience? NFL broadcasts almost exclusively use commentators who actually played the sport, why do we make excuses for people like Merchant, who are--at best--historians?

And if I have to listen another one of his ridiculous, long-winded stories, i'll throw my cable box out the window. I always change the channel when Merchant is on the screen. Watching him is like watching a SNL skit...what a joke.

Larry is a an ******* when fighters perform unfavorably or talk a bunch of game that is not exemplified in the ring. When DLH fought tito, Larry's comments and questions were pretty provoking, but DLH was respectfull enough to avoid confrontation with Larry. Mayweather on the other hand was disrespectfull and said many uncalled for comments.

Larry was not satisfied by the "Gladiator's" performance. It was lackluster and boring. Larry is a boxing fan, and seeing a fight that does not entertain you from the most talented and gifted fighter in boxing was dissapointing. Remember that the crowd was also booing Mayweather.

So what? You don't need to box to comprehend the sport. Anybody with two eyes and a brain can see what's going on and describe it.

You don't like Merchant and that's fine. Everybody is entitle to their opinions; but to suggest that Merchant doesn't know boxing after covering it for all the years he has is ridiculous. Also, he, as a fan, knows what's entertaining and what's not. Mayweather can be the most skilled pugilist to ever put on gloves; but if the masses don't want to watch him fight because they are bored by him, he's gonna have a hard time convincing promoters to anti-up on the money. Tickets and PPV buys are what make a fighter a star....and there is a difference between being a star and being a champion prize-fighter. You can be one and not the other.

No argument on that note; but that doesn't make a fighter a better commentator than a follower of the sport. I remember Ray Leonard's commentary. He was a great fighter; but about as insightful as an onion behind the mic.

I said it wrong anyway lol...I like Larry but sometimes take his bordom as an insult to all of us who would love to be in his spot . It's like crying about your job even when you are well paid and ppl are begging for a job at the temp place .I just find it unprofessinal and unappriciative to all the great things he has .

Well, I look at like this: he's been covering fights forever, he knows who he is and that he's set for life, he also knows what he prefers and what he doesn't, and he, apparently, doesn't feel the need to paint a false picture....false in relation to how he feels about it. If he loves it, you know it. If he hates it, you know it.

I like that about him. I've watched some fights that were obvious dogs; but if you were listening to the commentators on radio, you'd have thought you were watching Hagler-Hearns. That stuff chaps my ass.

And, maybe it's the wanna-be writer in me; but most of the time I really enjoy his stories/analogies.

Boxing isn't about hitting and not being hit, it's about winning. ANY WAY YOU CAN THAT IS LEGAL. Tell me, was George Foreman not a great heavyweight? Ok then. Stop acting like only stylists and dancers are true fighters.
